Midweek trip to Midlands awaits struggling Latics.
I think the “do or die”, “six pointer”, “last chance saloon”, “must win game” phrases and cliches have all been used to death this season so I’m not going to bother. Quite simply between now and the end of the season I just want to see some fight.
The game against Blackburn at the weekend was disappointing on so many levels but the complete lack of players busting a gut was the hardest part to take for me. Roll back 12 months and I wrote an article for the fanzine about how the players had bought into the Wigan Athletic family and loved the club as much as we do and that could be seen at several games where we battled to the end and got a win or draw in the dying moments. That just doesn’t seem to the case this season. Granted we’re not quite at the 2015 level but we’re not far off.
Graham Barrow has managed to see the issue this week and has asked the midfield to support the forwards more but why has it taken this long for that comment to be made? It’s been a problem all season long with Will Grigg spending more time in his own half than attacking because he has had little to no support. We are far too cautious and far too defensive for a side in the bottom two of the division.
There has been plenty of talk pretty much since he walked through the door about Warren Joyce being out of his depth and people calling for his head, but with a record of just 16 points from a possible 60 you have to wonder. Blackburn’s victory on Saturday meant that Tony Mowbray since his appointment has picked up 7 points from a possible 9. It took us 10 games under Joyce to get to that target. Why do we never get the upturn of results that a new boss brings?
I’m not going to get into the whole should he stay or go debate here, my thoughts on him have been made clear the last few weeks anyway, but I do think he needs to change his philosophy going into games because at the moment we are heading to League One with a whimper.
