Enough is Enough

Divisions bottom two do battle at DW.

After the defeat to Ipswich on Tuesday night on yet another night when everything went our way to get ourselves out of this mess, aside from our result that is, there isn't really too much we can play for against bottom club Rotherham aside from pride.  Yes we mathematically can still survive and a win could mean we are right back in the hunt but realistically I can't see us stringing the several results together that we would need.  We look completely devoid of confidence at the moment.

There has been talk all season long on our message boards on who is to blame for this season and what the reasons for it are but I don't think you can pin point one thing.  Our summer transfer window had some strange calls with Sam Morsys move to Barnsley probably the biggest question mark, but there were still some relatively good signings made.  Or so we thought.  Adam Bogdan turned out to be an utter calamity who probably cost us more goals than he saved us.  The decision to leave him in the side for as long as we did being very strange.  There were rumours flying around that he had to play in 75% of our games or we needed to pay a fee to Liverpool.  Had he played in 75% then I think we would have been relegated a while ago.  Alex Gilbey looked a good signing at the start of the season but he joined Donervon Daniels and Reece James on the long term absentee list and our injuries certainly didn't help us.  The enigma that is Nick Powell was up and down in his performances, apparent commitment and his fitness levels and in the end has probably turned out to be a poor signing.  Then we had Jordi Gomez inexplicably left out the side despite being the only player who seemed capable of passing the ball to someone in a Wigan shirt.

The sacking of Gary Caldwell seemed to happen too early in the season despite several poor results because we were actually playing some good football at times but were our own worst enemies with mistakes from individual players costing us.  Something that has carried on and subsequently led to our defeat on Tuesday night.  Caldwell's last match in charge was against Brighton where we were beaten by an excellent strike in a match that we dominated against a side that could end up winning the division.  It wasn't the first match we controlled but came away on the wrong end of the score line but at the end of the day we are in a results based business so Gary was shown the door.  In the same way that the appointment two seasons ago of Malky Mackay pretty much sealed our relegation, the appointment of Warren Joyce did nothing to inspire anyone.  Strange team selections, strange tactics, dreadful performances.  He was allowed to stay at the club far longer than he should have.  Several games in which we didn't have a single shot at goal should have been enough to show him the door and a complete lack of emphasis on winning games when we were fighting for points showed that he was simply out of his depth.  An experiment gone horribly horribly wrong.

They say that the league table doesn't lie but when we are sat where we are with one of the best defences in the division it can be frustrating.  The one reason why we are where we are is a complete lack of goals.  Throw into the mix that we will probably see the season out with no strikers and those several results we need to survive look further away.  When we went to Rotherham on Boxing Day I think the majority of us were expecting a win that was hopefully the springboard to a positive festive season.  Instead we were 3-0 down at half time after another series of individual errors.  Yes we fought back in the second half but ultimately we were beaten by the worst side in the division.  If we lose again today then we most certainly deserve our relegation.  If we win then I think it just prolongs the inevitable but I would like to see four good home performances before the season ends.  We fans certainly deserve that.  Personally, I just want to see us go out and show some fight until the end of the season and put the impending relegation behind us as quickly as possible.
