Powell winner gets Latics off to flyer

Nick Powell's first-half goal splits the sides after both finish with 10 men.

SKYBET LEAGUE ONE - STADIUM:MK - Saturday August 5th 2017

Powell (38)

Paul Cook's first game in charge was a winning one after a dominant display at the manufactured Stadium:MK against football franchise MK Dons.  A line-up boasting quality throughout was too much for the home side even when Callum Elder had been shown a straight red on his debut just before the break for a challenge on George Williams.  Harsh to be given a red perhaps, but the Leicester loanees foot was up and his studs were showing.  Any chance the home side had of turning the game in the second half were probably wiped out just before the hour when they too were a man down after Scott Wooten brought Michael Jacobs down on halfway.  Again, a little harsh perhaps with men covering but Jacobs was effectively through on goal.  MK boss Robbie Neilson believing that the ref 'crumbled' to the pressure put on at half time but I personally just think he knew he had made a mistake in sending Elder off so evened it up.

The performance was promising for the season ahead especially with the way that Nick Powell and Ivan Toney linked up upfront and Powell took his goal well after Michael Jacobs' through ball and looked a threat throughout.  If we can keep him fit and interested this season then he will probably walk the divisions player of the year award.

You can never read too much into the early stages of a season, but a win is a win and had it not been for former Latics keeper Lee Nicholls it could have been an emphatic one.
