Aaa, the magical merry go round of football management.

You never know he might surprise us all and do well up there. It is a bit of a tin pot league.

Coyle had a shocker at Latics and left us in a mess, but he also left me with my favourite ever football trip, that amazing trip to Bruges. I will never forget that. I know he didn't actually get us there but he was part of the memory.

A mess? What did he do? Relegate us from the Greed League then piss off? Relegate us from The Championship?

He didn't. But to be fair donny, i think he played the initial part to the "start" of the mess we have found ourselves in over the last 3-4 years.

I suppose 'mess' is a subjective term, so it opens me up to criticism. I agree he didn't do the relegation stuff etc that you mention, but my recollection from the time was we probably only won half a dozen games or so, we were pretty low in the league, there was an undercurrent of discontent in the stadium and the team looked a bit disorganised, with a squad that was probably one of the favourites to go back up. I guess thats what I meant by a mess. Despite all that Belgium was still my favourite trip! and it was under Coyle and he came over and clapped us all in the rain, in his shorts, at at that point it felt good, having had some alcohol free lager in the stadium.

Don't get me wrong I was no big fan of Coyle but after Bobby left us and Whelan sold the best players Coyle was rushed in and completely re-built the squad. He had a difficult period to follow the cup win and to bed a new group of players in plus having both the League and Europa League to prepare for. His squad just missed out on promotion and reached a cup semi-final too. That wasn't all down to Uwe.
I would rate him no worse than anything that followed him that's Rosler McKay Caldwell and Joyce. Cook hasn't been here long enough yet.

Yes indeed, it was coyle's squad that uwe took to both an FA cup & play-off semi final, but i firmly believe that coyle would not have got anywhere near both had he have remained in charge.

We were seriously struggling when Uwe took over.
That's why Coyle was sacked. He ceratinly hadn't built any sound foundations.

Nor did Uwe for McKay or McKay for Caldwell or Caldwell for Yootha or Yootha for Cook. Let's hope Cook can start to build those foundations to give us some stability and take us forward again.
Not to forget either the complete and utter crumbling foundations Martinez left for Coyle.A relegated club whose manager had turned his back on with a threadbare squad full of more want away players.

Right, all you slagging Coyle off, heres something you may find interesting about his recruitment as Latics manager. This comes from someone "very close" to Owen Coyle who told me this recently.

Our esteemed then chairman, met with Owen Coyle at Charnock Richard golf club to discuss him becoming the new Latics boss. They talked about the club, football, whatever, and the chairman then said "so do you fancy the job?"
Coyle said "well, yes, but what about the finances?" To which the chairman grasped his hand to shake on it and said "do you want the job?" Again, Coyle asked about finances and budgets, but the chairman was just grasping his hand and saying "the job is yours".

And thats how the meeting ended. Coyle drove home to Clitheroe, thinking there would be another meeting to iron out the finances and available budgets. However, by the time he arrived home, it was all over Sky Sports that we had appointed him as our manager! Coyle couldn't believe it.
Our esteemed mouth piece of a chairman had done it again. It sounds about right that budgets and finances were avoided.

Apparently as well, Owen Coyle still loves Latics as a club and wants us to do well. One major disappointment was Grant Holt. He thought he would be a great signing, but it didnt work out.
And there you go!

But again Holt is not the only striker to fail at the strikers grave yard.
