Keep hearing phrases of jcl etc, my quid is there is no one on here who really is a jcl.
So let’s see who is and who isn’t,
I started going to Latics early 70s with my grandad and dad, don’t know when my first match was or who it was against as I was probably about 5, it would have been none league although there is a chance it was the fa trophy at Wembley, I went but can’t remember.
Any more contributions?

Jcl’s are welcome in my book

My first game was a 1-0 win in our last non league season 77-78 against Altrincham. I can still recall the flavour of the salt and vinegar crisps dad bought me at half time. We stood by the wall in front of the Phoenix stand and I was amazed at how big the crowd was.

So what's classed as a jcl? I went to the odd non league game with my dad but only thing I remember is being cold and wanting to go home and I went to Wembley in 73. I went to the first league game and a few others that first season. I started going proper 1980 both home and away and been going eversinse, although i was a city fan in the seventies and went the odd game but soon lost interest when I started watching latics. I would be interested to know who other people supported before we got into the league.

I agree, I was interested in the audience of this forum, seems to me that we are all a bit long in the tooth and I wonder how you get a younger set of posters before we all pop our clouds or forget how to use a computer or smartphone!

First memories really were of Allan Browns side in the mid sixties but probably made my debut in the late 50's when carried on by my dad and grandad.
Yip I'm an old decrepid miserable sod but also yip JCL's are most welcome along with anyone who walks through those turnstiles to follow The Latics.
It's amazing now to see Hong Kong Latics, NYC Latics, Argentina Latics,Brazil Latics, Argentina Latics, Australia Latics and closer to home the Irish Latics.
All in the Latics Brotherhood. Simply Loveleah!

The famous Port vale game at home ,good Friday 1979.
5-3 home win and arguably the greatest comeback
In the clubs history.
Id bet that most on this site are diehards and I reckon all the JCLs ( Premier league supporters are the JCLs in my opinion ) long ago resigned their 2005-6 home shirts into the garages to wash the car.
Good supporters view football as a habit they cannot kick due to sheer love for their respective clubs and all the brilliant social aspects that go with it.
My other first was taking my then 4 year old son to his first game at the back end of the 93-94 season against Darlington in a relegation battle. He at was being schooled in all things Rugby by some of my relatives at the timebut never looked back after his first visit to our lovely old springy.
What a story since and some fantastic trips abroad , a great story.
Been great to reacquaint myself on here with all the old names after my social media resignation .
A great site to be on

Port Vale at home the memories flood back. We arrived late to find Latics 1-0 down already (not the 1st time that season) and couldn’t get a programme. It was 2-0 by half time and I vividly recall a drunken fan trying to climb out over the turnstiles and falling back down onto his arse.
When we took the lead dad was throwing me up in the air on the town end, brilliant fun. I don’t know how he did it but a few days later, somehow my grandad produced a programme with Peter Houghton’s autograph on the cover. Still have that programme today.

My dad collected every home and away programme from when we joined the league, I think he stopped when we got to the premier league. Quite a unique collection I suspect. We still have it.

I left at 0 3 had a slanging match with Ian McNeill at half time and was so upset I walked it back to Shevvy . What a numbskull. Only ever left 1 game early since and that was England v Wales coz the last train back was leaving shortly after the final whistle.

In the West Stand near me, the same people always leave with about 5 mins to go, the amount of last minute equalisers and winners they have missed is ridiculous.
I have once got up to go before the whistle, but only made it to the gantry where you go down the steps. I couldn't leave in case we got a quick one and two fast uns to turn a 0-2 into a 3-2, needless to say, we didn't, but at least I stayed until the whistle.

The amount of goals I've missed going for a half time pint is unbelievable.

I have a massive superstition about that. I've purposely stayed downstairs in big games if we have scored why I was at the bar. Can get quite messy if it's still open
