Wigan Athletic were denied a share of the spoils from a scrappy game at Goodison Park which saw a total of six Latics players booked.

PREMIER LEAGUE – GOODISON PARK – Sunday 30th August 2009

EVERTON
Saha 62
Baines (pen) 90
2-1
WIGAN ATHLETIC
Scharner 57

Louis Saha’s headed goal for the host cancelled out Paul Scharner’s opener and just as it looked like the game was to end in a stalemate Everton earned themselves a penalty after Emmerson Boyce brought down Jo in the area.

Up stepped former Wigan left back Leighton Baines to take the spot kick and plant it firmly in the back of the net leaving Wigan to make the journey back down the East Lancs Road empty handed.
