Wigan Athletic yet again was victim to a referee bottling a decision against a ‘top’ club. Latics more than held their own for most of this game but managed to get on the wrong end of a 4-0 score line, one that flattered United.

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE – DW STADIUM – Saturday 26th February 2011

WIGAN ATHLETIC

0-4
MANCHESTER UNITED
Javier Hernandez (17,74)
Wayne Rooney (84)
Fabio Di Silva (87)

Mark Clattenburg will be the one that will take the headlines as he failed to send off Wayne Rooney as he maliciously elbowed James McCarthy in the 7th minute, a decision that set the tone for the game as he and Scholes were allowed to get away with murder.

It was a very frustrating game as Clattenburg stopped the game so much as Man United threw themselves to floor on every occasion. Latics were keeping possession well and had they been better in front of goal, could well have been 3 up inside twenty minutes.

Had it not been for Van der Saar in the first 15 minutes it could well have been Latics on a rout, but the Dutchman was on top form. McCarthy was visibly shook after the elbow/forearm he received from Rooney, but the referee offered only the United players the protection.

But as I mentioned, the decision to let Rooney off without even a yellow and not to punish some cynical fouls by United left the lads deflated again and didn’t deserve the end scoreline. 4-0 was very flattering and didn’t depict the way the game panned.
