Chris Kirkland left Wigan Athletic on a free transfer after his contract run out in June this year, moving to Sheffield to Championship side Wednesday. Yesterday though, it is alleged that he has asked for his contract to be ripped up.
Kirkland has always had problems with his fitness, his back being the main issue, but it wasn’t for medical reasons that he felt he couldn’t fulfil his obligations at the Owls.
The travelling from his home in Ormskirk seemed to be taking it’s toll as pre-season kicked in and the goalkeeper was not willing to uproot his young family (plus a rumoured illnes with his wife) to move closer to his new team.
It is reported that he went to see the chairman and gaffer on Friday asking to be released from his contract and as they already have 4 goalkeepers on the books have agreed….
It is not known whether he will try to find a new club or go into coaching.
