After Latics disastrous first home game of the season, we welcome Manchester United to the DW Stadium this Saturday afternoon…
Saturday sees the visit of Champions Manchester United to the DW Stadium and Latics will be wondering whether they are going to see a backlash from the loss they suffered on Wednesday night against Burnley, or whether they can emulate the newly promoted team’s exploits.
By all accounts the Red Devils were all over the clarets but a screamer from Nathan Blake will leave the record books showing a Burnley victory. It was also mentioned that United were also not at full strength with Van Der Sar, Vidic, Ferdinand, Neville, Nani and Evans missing the game.
These players will more than likely be missing for the visit to the DW Stadium as well but Evans and Nani could be close to returning. We will also be welcoming back Luis Antonio Valencia back to Latics as he continues to find the form that interested United and Real Madrid.
The Ecuadorian midfielder has had a bit of a rough ride there so far, but no doubt a return to Wigan will bring the best out in him. Wayne Rooney will also start the game as he continues his quest for that 100th goal.
Latics came through midweek without any injury worries, Olivier Kapo continues to be our only player on the treatment table and with the performance against Wolves there are plenty of players that need to turn out good performances to keep the fans believing that the opening day massacre of Villa wasn’t just a fluke.
Whether Bobby will make any changes to the side that couldn’t break Wolves down or not remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, if we have another first half like that again on Saturday, it could get embarrassing.
We are played 8 lost 8 against United, but the home games seem to be the ones where we usually come out unlucky losers. Maybe with a good performance against an under strength United we might just see that first win against the top 4.
What we do have to be a bit wary about is the fact that they will be fuming about losing to Burnley and will be baying for blood. I am sure that Martinez will have done his homework though and at least he won’t have to try to brief his team on how to get past an 11 man defence.
