In-form Wigan on cusp of Championship return

Wigan Athletic are in prime position for a welcomed return to the Championship next season, after a recent surge of results at the backend of the domestic campaign has seen them slot in at top spot in the League One table.

The automatic promotion race has really heated up of late, with all of Wigan, Blackburn Rovers and Shrewsbury Town vying for a straight move up divisions from their current position in the third tier of English football.

The Latics are flying high and should be more than capable of securing a desired return to the Championship for next season and they are regarded as a promising odds-on 4/6 in the football betting tips from Betfair to overcome Fleetwood Town next time out, after their recent surge in form and impressive run of results.

Following a hard-fought narrow 1-0 victory over Oxford United in their last domestic league outing, Paul Cook's in-form roster sit in a highly promising position at the summit of League One's standings.

They reside on an impressive 90 points tally so far from their games with just four matches left to play in what has been a highly dramatic and exciting 2017/18 campaign. Of course, the job isn't finished yet, but they are flying high and presently sit three points ahead of closest rivals and title challengers Blackburn Rovers.

But Wigan's form and admirable performances of late under the guidance of Steve Cook should see them over the line and back into the Championship for next term.

Blackburn are hot on their heels after some impressive showings and solid results of their own of late, but with Shrewsbury Town breathing down their necks even at this crucial stage of the term, any slip-ups could prove disastrous for any team vying for a promotion place.

Wigan have four testing games ahead which will decide their fate for next season, with Cook preparing to set up his outfit for match-ups against Fleetwood Town, Bristol City, AFC Wimbledon and, on the final day of the season, Doncaster Rovers.
Cook's men have the momentum and confidence needed to get themselves over the line, and in style too, but they will know this is far from straightforward.

Wigan next have a trip to Fleetwood to contend with before facing yet another away trip after that to Bristol. Following those next two games, Cook must deal with the threat of Wimbledon on home soil. Then, it's a visit to Doncaster on the last day of the campaign which will seal their fate.

With three of the final four league meetings being away from home, there's even more pressure on their shoulders, but this should work in their favour and keep their focus rather than them tailing off at this decisive point of an exciting campaign.
