After the excitement of the FA Cup it is back to Premier League business for Roberto’s Wigan Athletic as we are hosted by Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn Rovers.
Latics will want to put their first half nightmare at Meadow Lane firmly behind them as we make the short trip up to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers. Our hosts have nothing but the League to concentrate on now after they were unceremoniously dumped out of the Carling Cup last week and never played in the FA Cup this week due to being beat by Aston Villa on both counts.
Blackburn have only won one Premier League game in the last nine (1 in 14 including cups), but their record against us at Ewood in the League is currently 3 wins and a draw in the four games played. This is a stat that we need to fix if we want to climb above them in the league, with only two points separating us in the table.
Latics will have to do it without the services of keepers Chris Kirkland and Richard Kingson. Kirkland injured his collarbone in a training ground accident whilst Kingson has made it to the semi finals of the African Cup of Nations with Ghana.
Blackburn could welcome Latics old boy (and current target in the January transfer window dependant on which rag you read) Jason Roberts, but they will be without Samba due to his sending off in the Carling Cup semi, Grella and Jacobsen are both injured. If West Ham get their way, Benni McCarthy could also be missing due to them chasing his signature.
Latics won’t be fielding any new players even though the arrival of Marco Ruben is imminent, he will probably sign about ten minutes after the shut off time for him to be able to play in this game. This may see Jason Scotland try to build on the goal he scored at the weekend to keep him the frame for when this signing does go through, but with 20 League games without one the odds are against him.
There is no reason that we can’t go up to Blackburn and win this, it just depends which team turns up…. but there is no doubt that a win would be a great boost ahead of the Everton game this weekend.
