Entry at the qualifying round could require just one game at home and one away, right at the start of the season.
Entry at the group stage would require much more – three home games and three trips abroad during the season.
You say require like its a bad thing.
There is a good possibility that next season will be Wigan Athletic’s only ever season in Europe. We should enjoy every moment of it, I personally can not wait for Europe and my aim is to go to every game we have, even if we draw FC Luch-Energyia Vladivostok I will be there.
I do not understand those who think of Europe as a burden. At least they won’t get in the way of my fun away.
I would much rather play in this qualifying round of the Europa league has it would aid match fitness for the players as opposed to faffing about in a pre season friendly against Prescott cables or the like and no disrespect to Prescott cables
you’ll all be pleased to know that your royal highness shall be attending every fookin one……even if it means phoning in sick a few times or getting in serious debt………WOULDN’T MISS THIS FOR THE WORLD
I can understand your personal excitement – even though we don’t know the destinations as yet.
But how can these extra trips help Wigan as either a Premiership team with modest resources or a Championship team facing 46 challenging league matches?
Look what European competition has reduced Newcastle to this season – and they have an enormous squad.

Newcastle like us have had to put up with a massive injury list with Ben Hartha there main mon out most of the season and like us have had problems with injury in defence .I would say a fully fit Newcastle squad would be higher up the league and could of got further in Europa league imo

So what on Earth do you want from Wigan? You just want us to survive year after year? European football is the next level, it helps to keep and attract players. It brings excitement to the club apart from miserable sods like yourself.
Do us all a favour and don’t bother coming to any European matches.
I’ll lighten up when Premier League status is assured! With television fees jumping up next season, it’s far, far more important than the cup and European qualification. The game that matters most is Spurs on Saturday.
Martinez was right – he knew cup success would conflict with the struggle for survival. He certainly did his best to avoid progress in the early rounds. Thank goodness we didn’t progress in the League Cup too.
I can’t get excited about the Europa League. It isn’t by any means the next level. We’ve achieved it by beating one Conference team, one League One team, two Championship teams and one Premier League team. And we’ll have to go a long way in it to meet a team of Premier League standard.
Don’t expect Martinez to show any more enthusiasm for the Europa League than he does for domestic cups. Fulham had a reasonable squad and were the best coached team in the country when they played in it. They reached the final, but exhaustion then caught up with them.
Their league form slipped too, but they were strong enough to stay in mid-table. By 2011, Al-Fayed had provided Fulham with £187 million in interest free loans. Wigan are not as well financed as they were.
I’ll cheerfully settle for trips to Cardiff and Swansea.

Agree with you.
But we’re in it now, so we have to prepare for it. Should be a busy summer transfer wise, as squad is nowhere near big enough. Be nice if we hosted the likes of Inter Milan here on a Thursday night, but then again away trips to places like Romania would take their toll.
If we stay up, its a bargaining tool to keep players and also attract new players. If we go down, its going to be a very busy season.
Imagine Wiganers trying to speak the local lingo? No, me neither.
