Preston North End 1 Wigan Athletic 4

Sporting their brand new orange away kit for the very first time Wigan Athletic gave Lancashire rivals Preston North End a footballing lesson at a rain soaked Deepdale with Hugo Rodallega, Charles N'Zogbia, Michael Brown and Jason Scotland all on target for Roberto Martinez's side. Former Wigan striker Neil Mellor netted a late goal for the hosts but it was mere consolation in a game totally dominated by the visitors.

Whatever Roberto Martinez instilled in his new side over in Austria most definitely had the desired effect because back on home soil they handed out a footballing lesson Preston North End at a wet Deepdale.

The Championship side had gone into the game on the back of an unbeaten run in their pre-season campaign and took on a Wigan side still looking for a first victory the Lillywhites found themselves outclassed all over the park.

Two goals in each half settled this friendly with Preston grabbing a late consolation goal through Neil Mellor, once on loan at Wigan.

Hugo Rodallega grabbed Wigan's first with 10 minutes of the opening period remaining and Charles N'Zogbia doubled the lead 3 minutes later to give the Premier League side a comfortable cushion going into the break.

Both goalscorers were replaced during the interval, Martinez making a total of six changes to his starting line up, and it was three of his substitutions that quickly combined to add a third goal.

Rachid Bouaouzan and debutant Jason Scotland teamed up to set up Michael Brown for a rare goal a couple of minutes after the restart and Brown was then instrumental in Jason Scotland's first goal in a Wigan shirt with little over 10 minutes remaining when the Trinidad and Tobago international pounced on a loose ball after Preston keeper Andy Lonergan had spilled a low drive from Brown.

Neil Mellor's 86th goal for the hosts did little to dampen the travelling Wigan fans' spirits as they'd already seen enough of the reassembled side to give them plenty to be pleased about ahead of the new season which kicks off in earnest at Villa Park in less than three weeks time.

Will Grigg Rumour The big difference is you as a person who watches football can “think” that but those at the football club have to decide.

Will Grigg Rumour To maximise your investment may be better for you guys to stay down. Grigg won't cut it in championship as you've pointed out. Absolute panic buy and seems your forms hardly improved since he's been in team.

Will Grigg Rumour I'm not so sure it would I'd beg to differ. What price would you put on the head of a striker with one year remaining on his contract with 8 goals in 43 Championship games that cant get into the starting XI of a bottom-5 championship side?

Today's game Agree. We certainly don't set out for a point but as games go on, things change and you have to change accordingly. It became obvious 2nd half that they would be the more likely side to nick it so first things first we had to make sure we got a point...

Will Grigg Rumour He'll score goals no problem, I think even in the Championship he'll score, it's just at Wigan he was never given a chance due to injuries and why go up you make a loss anyway.
