Just take Bournemouth for instance, they have a smaller population but no competition bar Southampton 32 miles away and Pompey 50 odd no big second sport which is a massive advantage.
They have no doubt weighed up the cost of a new stadium and thought, what’s the point? Like Whelan once said:-“There’ll come a time when you will be able to let fans in for free TV and sponsorship will generate that much money”.
Would Bournemouth sell out a 30k stadium ? yep for the first year or so then it would dwindle till they start averaging 17k-20k so it would be a complete waste of time and a few £100million.
Regarding us and a ground too big. Look through our history crowd wise even the year before we went up. The vast majority of the crowds were between 7k to 10k and that was when we were rolling high.
Then the first year we went up ? 12k on in the Carling Cup Semi with quite a few Prem games that year 17k-20k and that was in our first year 5k-8k empty seats.
The year after got worse, nearly half our league games averaged around the 16k mark with City and Utd 16k and 20k
My point is, our location and Wigan born generations of Everton City Utd Liverpool fans and the fat fook chubbie egg chasers who hate football means we just don’t have the fanbase for Latics.
Back to my remark, the stadium has never been full bar a handful of football games in all it’s history.
I know what you mean saying better having enough but that’s like your nans old Sunday roast dinner were there’s so much you leave half but if you got given half as much to start with you’d have seconds “if you wanted”.
The not been available creates want, too much of anything means your in no rush knowing it’s a doddle to get a ticket. I’m sure if we had a smaller 15k-18k stadium there’d be a bigger demand and a better atmosphere.
And? What do you think (God forbid) if we ended up back in the Prem?. Danson would give the away fans the West Stand, the corporate the whole 9 yards. He’d dump us fans like diarrhea off a park slide.
Were only here keeping it ticking over till we were sold. I can see one thing, Danson selling us then renting the stadium back to any potential new owners at a tidy profit making sure he charges enough to subsidise the rugby, that’s unless we fluke it to the Prem.
Whelan had a huge vision and he almost got it right but there was an awful lot wrong with his plan “Eyes bigger than belly” comes to mind.
25,000 seats is an awful lot to fill in such a small town and 4 huge Prem clubs 40mins on the train away.
In 25 years to the present day crowds were about 2k-3k up only 22 years ago we had some games with 3.5k on.
Were a 15k a week all day long in the Prem and a good atmosphere currently with our crowds a smaller stadium and 10k crowd would be far far better.
It’s ok saying what about the big games when we’ve not enough seats? how many times have we sold out ? I’d be more concerned about the vast majority of games were we’ve too many seats and theres 18k empty seats making for a poor atmosphere.
