So Liverpool go three goals down in the first half, but then “miraculously” and “with inspired play” pull three back in the second half and win on penalties.
This all against a team that shortly afterwards was implicated in 2006 in all sorts of dodgy dealings of match fixing – that had been going on for some time. Needless to add that Berlusconi was the club owner.
But somehow the final was whiter than white.

Ah yes, but when you think about it, even at pens after extra time, there was no guarantee. Most people would’ve backed Shevchenko to have scored that penalty that Dudek saved…..and don’t forget he pulled off that superb point blank block from Shevchenko as well.
I think it was more a case of Italian complacency, and the fact that Liverpool just had more left in their lockers in that second half.
