During a conversation at our Thursday Night Football last week about my 5-4-Friday, we digressed to a Football XI of players known for addictions of some sort, or at least a very well documented liking for something they shouldn’t.
We came up with a decent team – if only you could keep them out of the pub/bookies/pharmacy!
GK – Peter Shilton
RB – Gary Charles
CB – Tony Adams
CB – Paul McGrath
LB – Kenny SansomRM – Paul Merson
CM – Bryan Robson
CM – Paul Gascoigne
LM – George BestFW – Diego Maradona
FW – Jimmy GreavesManager – Brian Clough/Howard Kendall
Any improvements?

7 March 2014 at 12:02 am #128181Sorry to say our own Warren Aspinall, but the lad got through it and now is helping others with their gambling /drink addictions and the deep depression that comes with it. :)
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!7 March 2014 at 12:57 am #128183Keith Gillespie gambled away earnings of £7,215,875
“And that’s only a conservative sketch of the incomings. It doesn’t include boot deals, promotional appearances, Northern Ireland match fees, libel settlements and all the other elements that come with the territory.”
And he’s still in trouble.
28 FEBRUARY 2014
Retired Premier League footballer Keith Gillespie appeared in court in handcuffs today after a judge ordered his arrest. He had been due to appear charged with breaching a non-molestation order on January 21 this year by being “in the vicinity of the Hamilton Road”.

7 March 2014 at 5:13 am #128192Quite a number of years I bought a newish industrial boiler out of a school or sports centre that was being demolished in Northernden, Manchester we had to take down the boiler house to get it out, while lifting some steel with a crane I got my finger trapped nearly chopping it off.
I went to Wythenshawe Hospital A&E for treatment, while in the x ray waiting area Paul Mcgrath came in and sat next to me, he had a swollen and damaged right hand, as sometimes happens in hospitals we traded information on our injuries and how they happened, seems he had been playing cards and drinking all night in a house on the Bench Hill Estate, a notorious rough council estate 20 or so years ago, and had got into a fight with someone and hurt his hand, hence the xray, he stank of alcohol but chatted to me friendly as anything.
I didn’t see him again after I went to have my finger stitched up. It was either a Thursday or Friday, Mcgrath played for Villa the day after, Villa and the press claimed he was playing in a special cast on his hand that he had broken when he fell in training.

Why? You are seriously trying to say that he has a similar drink problem to Clough and Kendall?

Apart from a quite ridiculous suggestion of Alex Ferguson, nobody has managed to come up with anyone that we hadn’t already considered. However, I should probably have pointed out that selection for the team was based on a vague formula comprising a combination of quality of player and level/notoriety of alleged addictedness. That’s why Roy Carroll/Warren Aspinall were considered, for example, but were ultimately rejected in favour of better players.

I went to watch United at OT once and McGrath played the full 90 minutes. At the end of the game, I left sharpish as I wa smeeting someone in a pub in Sale to go some party or other. I made good time getting to the pub and when I walked in McGrath was already sat at the bar and was reportedly on his third pint.
You should read his autobiography – very dark.
