We were down to around 7,000 last season, which was a drop of 10,000 from the Prem. This season, the euphoria of promotion and the lure of dirt cheap season tickets managed to persuade 3,000 of the deserters to come back.

Sad as it seems, with no announcement on ST prices for next season, no parachute payment to subsidise them, and every reality we’ll be swapping trips to Newcastle for trips to Southend, then I can see the desertion gathering pace.

Hopefully not Pie. With a winning side and reasonable priced ticketing we could see similar crowds to last season. The extras from this compared to last will most likely drop off again so it is essential to have a side playing positive attacking football. No massive turnover of playing staff required. This squad minus the borrowed invalids could storm League One with the right man in charge.

I don’t doubt they’d storm League one with the current squad, but those who consider themselves to be worthy of Championship football and don’t fancy being back on League 1 wages will have their agents agitating for a move all the way up to 31 August. Similarly, if the club foolishly haven’t included relegation clauses, then they’ll be trying to peddle some of the higher earners to save cash.

Throw into the pot no manager for next season, so no transfer targets, no news on what price ST will be and the fact that Wiganers are generally tighter than a duck’s arse when it comes to spending money on sporting fixtures, and there is very little to convince anyone but the most die-hard blue to put aside £200+ for next season’s campaign.

It always makes me laugh when I hear people talk about Utd/Liverpool great supporters compared to ours, but it does not dawn on these people the 70’000 that attend OT every other week is not the same 70’000 from the previous time. It’s the reason the atmosphere is shit at OT, tourist supporters that only attend the odd game. I would be pretty certain Newcastle will have a proportion of tourist supporters but nothing compared to Utd/Liverpool.

We on the other hand are an hard core support. So what do you class as great supporters, masses of tourist’s getting behind a big fashionable club or an hard core that gets behind their local club.

And before any dickhead as a go about why I’m not on my way to Newcastle. Firstly I’ve come off working nights this morning and secondly I don’t like the view from the away end, too high up and too far away from the pitch.

Snowblind … I agree …. I’m going for a committed ‘hard core’ support.

Apparently Manure have 1 of the best bunch of supporters anywhere ….. and I have to say the trip to OT, the stadium of dreams, certainly allowed dreams to happen. Apart from the noise we made, I don’t think I’ve ever been to such a soulless place. There was more life and atmosphere at every one of the Div 1 grounds I went to last season.

And why am I not going to NUFC today, ‘cos like you I was on a late finish last night and it’s too far to go. I’ve been to other games.

Snowbound it is your business and yours alone whether you go to whatever matches you want and you are also entitled to your own opinion. That’s why we have forums for you to say whatever you want.

Give me a small hardcore fanbase any day of the week.
That was the beauty of springfield park in one sense. We may not have known people’s names around us, but we knew their faces.

50,000 at Gallowgate is comparable with 6 or 7 thousand at New Springfield.
What’s this 10,000 down from 4 years ago thing?
Latics home crowd isn’t 10,000 down from then at all.

First season in premiership we averaged between about 18k and a full house on a few occasions.
Second season we put prices up and a couple of thousand glory hunters disappeared.
By the time we got relegated, we were averaging about 16-18k crowds.

Currently, we have around 10,000 home supporters on average at games. I think we’ve lost around 4000 since we were relegated.

Just watched the highlights of the Newcastle game and their second goal shouldn’t have stood for me. One of their players was off side & stood right in front of Gilkes when the first shot came in, blocking his view… Terrible decision but suppose that’s the way it goes when you’re down there.

Their first goal was borderline, and would probably have been flagged offside if it had been us. Having said that Dan Burn should have put that header in!!!
