It was last time I looked !! ;)

Ah, I see where you got it from – it’s the second search returned on google. You missed out the word “otherwise”, though. It looks a better definition if you include otherwise, imo.

That’s just me being pedantic though, I suppose
I always find it better to quote the actual definition rather than my own interpretation of it despite already knowing what it actually means ! And I didnt get it from where you did, there is no “otherwise” so your pedantry fell on deaf ears I’m afraid so to speak !
Don’t mean to interject unnecessarily but I notice that various forms of the word pedant are being bandied about. Is the word being used euphemistically for less acceptable expressions? ;)

Sadly, we get the press and media coverage we deserve. In general, we have such dull lives that the only excitement we get is by observing other people live theirs. In the process we have made a lot of sad, shallow individuals like Jade Goody and Jordan multi-millionaires. We are nothing more than voyeurs, that is why we like reality TV so much.

Sad isn’t it? or should I say aren’t we?

We are playing well – just need the goals to go in !

in reply to: Will we support the team on Weds #22708

I’ll be there – supporting ES2 – supporting the boys (whoever Roberto plays).

Life is all about experiences and Wigan Athletic has given me a multitude of them in my lifetime. Many of them have been bad but they only seem to make the good times better. When we beat Bolton, I will go home, pour a bottle of Rosato Delle Venezie, and savour the moment. It will rank amongst the highlights of my life alongside sailing in the Whitsunday Islands, wringing the neck out of my Suzuki Hayabusa and the win against Chelsea. Life is soooooo good, but you must live it to the full and never let it get you down. 8-)

PS I’ve had a bottle already !!

in reply to: Should the Prem save Pompey ??????????????? #22704

My mother ( she was a very wise woman ) always taught me never to gamble “that which you are not prepared to lose”. Unfortunately Portsmouth have gambled with their very existence and may have lost.

The club will survive but not in it’s present form. It is to be hoped that it is a salutary lesson to the rest of football but somehow I doubt it.

Filmoss, does this mean you might try out the restaurants known as Deepdale or Sh*tbok in the near future, or will you persist with the fayre at the DW for just a bit longer?

I aint goin anywhere Horc I am clearly a glutton for punishment !! I must be the only one who leaves the restaurant every couple of weeks feeling I have been done ! There’s always the chippy ont way home I guess !!
Oh and just for the record I have never booed a player or a manager in my life. I may have stood up in frustration at Scotland and shouted “I rest my case” but I hardly think he would have heard me. I religiously buy a season ticket every season and when we have a striker who hasn’t scored a single goal in over 20 odd league games I think I am entitled to moan about him ! As soon as the penny drops with our manager we may just see some goals on a regular basis ! If anyone thinks Scotland is good enough in this league then they are either deluded or just plain stupid ! I REST MY CASE !
Fil, why must you keep putting words in peoples’ mouths?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion as you so eloquently put it. This has never been an issue with anyone on this forum as far as I’m aware and never will be. The reason you are taken to task is because of the manner in which you express these said opinions. Your sometimes vitriolic attacks are seen by many to be OTT and unnecessary. They are considered to be unsupportive of the team and counterproductive when it comes to building confidence and improving performances.

You seem to be one of those people who never actually listen to what people say but put words into their mouths and then attempt to destroy arguments which they have never actually made. Just because people tell you to get off players’ backs doesn’t mean that they think that the said players are world class, they just want you to be supportive of the team. This also applies to Roberto of course, he obviously has things to learn but having thousands (poetic license) of fans on his back will not help his progress as Newcastle have discovered on numerous occasions.

I think it is fair to say that things went “pear-shaped” in both the Everton and Stoke games when Jason Scotland went off. That is not to say that I think he is on a par with Alfredo Di Stefano but it is to say that he is the best we have at what he does. (good opportunity here for one of your “nuggets” of wit/wisdom).

Unfortunately at this restaurant, a large proportion of the clientele expect Michelin Star standards from the new, inexperienced chef, and tend to boo and barrack him through the serving hatch between courses, and at the end of meals.

Chef brought a couple of his tried and tested signature dishes with him, which, it’s fair to say, have been met with a mostly unfavourable responses from the regulars, and his attempts to move to a more continental menu have been received quite badly by the predominantly meat-and-two-veg customers.

The restaurant owner bought the business when it was originally based out of a burger-van, but some of the regular customers have criticised him for not investing further in the business, and his failure to bring in elite staff from the upmarket eateries. His preference to avoid risk and keep the restaurant financially stable has meant the doors have always been open for the regulars, despite their protests that by now they should be seeing a French Maitre D, juggling barmen and tappanyaki.

It is becoming the opinion of those who enjoy the restaurant, even if the food can be hit and miss sometimes, that some of the regulars would be better advised not to bother booking their tables for next week, and f00k off and starve, metaphorically speaking, obviously.

Now that’s what you call an analogy Fil !

in reply to: The Meal Analogy ! #22588
Now as football is a product sold to us through our respective clubs can I just say that as a paying customer I am not happy !
On to the analogy…. If you pay good money for a meal and for whatever reasons the food isn’t up to scratch you grumble and moan or even summon the waiter. Now as a paying customer of Wigan Athletic I too have every right to grumble and moan if I am not too happy with my purchase ( Season Ticket ) ! Now this ” Give him time ” stuff I keep hearing, moving back to the analogy….Would you frequent a restaurant if you had had a couple of ropey meals and then found out that the chef was actually still learning his trade without the assistance of a chef who had experience of preparing meals to meet customers needs ? Probably not ! Especially if he kept making the same mistakes !
Well I am one of those unfortunate diners and I aint been fully sated in a long time ! So can we get someone in to assist him please because his souffle is as flat as the atmosphere in his restaurant !!

I thought you were resting your case !!

in reply to: Martinez’s Tactics #22492

it must run in the spanish nature, benitez aint got a clue either.

And people wonder why the folk of Wigan are regarded as racist and xenophobic.
please explain why this is racist and xenophobic, and who are the people who think this, seems to me your the type of person people speak about, politically correct over the top type that is intent on ruining this country.
If you can’t see it then it is beyond the capabilities of anyone on this forum to explain it to you. I suggest that you start by looking up the meanings of the two words.

in reply to: Martinez’s Tactics #22417
i really cant get my head around what he is thinking, even a 12 year old lad knows more about substitions then this plank we have as a manager.

yesterday we dominated the first 45 mins and deserved our lead at half time, i quite like the style/ formation he plays when attacking, lets call it a 4 3 3 with rodders and n’zogbia joining up with the striker, then when defending we have a solid 5 man midfield. martinez gets his tactics spot on.

now the second half starts and sadly McCarthy gets injured, who i feel was having another man of the match performance, now he brings Thomas on, no harm done there, like for like you could call it.

now this is where i get CONFUSED !!!!

we are doninating the game, 1 – 0 up and looking like where going to score and finish the game off, then out of the blue, he subs scotland, who i feel had his best game in a latics shirt, kept the ball up well, won alot of aerial battles, he subs him for GOMEZ, which then changes the whole formation and positions of vital players i.e, puts n’zogbia on the left, who i feel is not the same player on the left, then puts rodders up front, from that second on we never looked interested,

WHY CHANGE IT I REALLY CANT UNDERSTAND.
WHY NOT CHANGE LIKE FOR LIKE, SCOTLAND FOR MORENO/MOSES

if anyone can give me a reason for this substitute please let me know.
it must run in the spanish nature, benitez aint got a clue either.

You make some really good points but why must you make the nasty personal attacks? You make it very difficult for like-minded people to agree with you. It shows a complete lack of “class”.

in reply to: Is Martinez still the man for the job? #22413

In the first half, I was sat in WS4 with quite a smug grin on thinking to myself ‘you know what-it’s working, this Martinez revolution’. And it does at times. Diame sitting deep to break up the play, McCarthy getting the ball and keeping it simple, Zoggy tearing their right back to bits. And it does work. We were unplayable first half – same against Birmingham.

Just when I’m starting to get comfortable, we hit self-destruct. Scharner started to wander like a headless chicken meaning midfield goes walkies and we started giving the ball away far too easily. With no out ball to a striker when we’re under pressure, the defence can’t come out and we sit deeper and deeper. It was inevitable that Stoke were going to score (yet another header conceded by the way).

So the Bob plan does work but he needs to stop filling round holes with square pegs-Scharner is not an attacking midfielder. And I wish he would hold his hands up and admit that Gomez simply aint upto it. He should have been taken off for Moreno – not Diame (who was having his best game for us in my view).

If Bob tweaks these problems we’ll be fine. If he’s a stubborn get we’re going down. Simple as.

Fairly accurate that, imo. I think Bob is stubborn and as you say, if his tactics were working at the start of the game, then that is some evidence that it can work and some justification for his being stubborn.

However, he does need to find a plan B. That said, I am certain that he doesn’t say to the players at half-time: “Right lads, that was great. Now, they are going to come at us all guns blazing so make sure you go back out there, forget everything we did in the first half, stop concentrating, stop tackling and start misplacing a few passes. I’ll do my bit by bringing on Jordi in about 20 minutes time to f*** it all up big time.”

As much as it pains me to say it Bob does have a plan B, unfortunately it has cost us points against Everton and Stoke. On both occasions, his substitutions turned the game against us. As much as i try, I cannot understand his thinking and my heart sank when I saw who was going off and who was coming on.

In the heat of battle (as both games undoubtedly were) you dont bring gladiators off and replace them with poets and philosophers (speaking metaphorically and Thomas excepted). Bramble, Scharner et al must have felt like crying after all the effort they had expended and I do feel Bob let them down.

Two more moaning, negative, short-sighted gits reeled in.

    Easy-Peasy, this.

You, my socially engineered friend, have neither the intellect nor astuteness to make that claim – however many straws you grasp – don’t flatter yourself. You have indeed become the ‘coco’ amongst the clowns. As stated before, I have no need to explain myself to anyone, and my loyalties are beyond reproach. It is you that ‘should have gone to specsavers’.

Surely you don’t mean the brothers Grim

As for you Mr Owd…………………….I really expected better. A little disappointing coming from someone normally associated with clear, loyal, balanced opinion on all things Latics. Beware of fil’s board duster ;)

    M

It’s all getting a little tiresome on here. In standing up for reason and understanding, I appear to be alienating a lot of people. Perhaps I’d better just clam up and let the dark side get on with it. I will never change their views anyway.

PS If fil and Bob have balanced opinion, then I don’t want it.

Got to pull you up there Garswood lad – those two posts mention a certain JS

I am afraid you cannot do that as I am now the Cockney Latic filter for Owd Git – consider yourself towd off

Sorry if I upset you Tea Bag – I’m really really sorry
