There was a lot of lunging and over stretching going on last night from the back line trying to either receive a short paced pass or trying to win the ball back after another fluffed sideways or backwards pass ! I just think that the back line put themselves under more pressure dicking about as some of us call it when a more direct ball played away from goal before some keen forward comes chasing it down would be the better option. Perhaps I should have elucidated more what I meant initially but Stam last night was a classic example of what can happen dicking about in ones own half. The tactics need to be basic and simple for defenders, not overcooking it by passing for passing sake. Let the midfield men do the passing and creating and keep the back line for good old fashioned basic defending, it is drilled into kids from an early age who aspire to be defenders what the basics are. Keep it simple !
OK, so I was pissed off tonight. Really angry at a defensive display that was, let’s face it, a joke.
Swansea are already dreaming of their holidays and were there for the taking. We failed. Miserably!
But on Saturday I’m going to the FA Cup Final. I’m going to see my team walkout at Wembley in the final of the biggest domestic cup competition there is. My first memory of any game I went to was beating Sheffield Weds 1-0 backing the late 70s when we were still non-league. I’ll be there this weekend hours before the kick off. I’ll be singing Abide With Me, God Save the Queen and savouring every single second of it all. I’ll be doing it with my dad (who took me to that first game at Springfield Park), my brother, my sister, my son, my nephew, my cousin’s daughter, her boyfriend and god knows how many others I know.
I cried when we beat Reading to get promotion to the Premier League. I’d have been more than happy if we’d just had that one season in the top flight. Doubtless I’ll still shed a tear when we are relegated, whenever that may be. I’ve been expecting it every year for eight seasons. If it’s this time around then so be it. I’m going to enjoy Saturday. I’m going to enjoy the game after that and the final one against Villa. I’m going to enjoy next season too and the one after that, whatever level we are at.
Good post.
Apart form the crying bit – man up, for Christ’s sake!
I had the tune of ‘Land Of Hope And Glory’ swirling round in my head reading this initial post and then that abrupt scratched stop sound as I came to my senses and thought ” Why do folk keep trying to sweep our tactical and defensive frailties under the proverbial carpet by going all emotional and sentimental ? ” I am actually quite concerned about Saturday now after watching 180 mins of pub style football and fear that we could end up a laughing stock ! I hope to God that they can find it in themselves to wear their shirts with pride on Saturday and at least put in a decent shift. Saturday has no place for sentiment, we learned that last time we contested a major final. Roll your sleeves up lads and get fuckin stuck in ! :)
To be fair to the egg chasers, they have won a hell of a lot more silverware than the footy ! Watch the crowds drop if we go down ! All the arguments stem from the words of one man many moons ago and he isn’t anything to do with the club any more and so I say get on as one club because we will need all the extra income from our ground next season !
Suicidal defending, for an experienced player it’s inexplicable really. I heard he is going to have retire at end of season due to a long standing hip injury, not sure how true that is.We can all but pray ! :cheer:
he will go to everton…I thought this a while back but surely with their frugal spending habits this would be an out of the frying pan and into the fire scenario !
Fine margins. If MacArthur had connected to make it 3 we most likely would have won.If the defence hadn’t been decimated by loss of ramis and Alcaraz for most of season pretty confident we wouldn’t have been in this position. Just made worse by loss of figs, jean, at such a crucial time. Even the much maligned caldwell hasnt been fit all season and even the back up Lopez is still injured. In a system where we play 3 centre halves its been horrendous bad luck. Yeah we can criticise last nights formation, personnel and defensive tactics but ultimately I think these injuries told in the end.
I aint no football manager but to choose Caldwell over Golobart and Watson over Jones to me was just pure folly ! RM is the manager and it was his call and with the beauty of hindsight we can all say that it was a bad mistake by him. Even with the injuries etc I still think that he had no idea how to deal with the situation that unfortunately arose last night !
I would like him to stay and prove that he can get us back up but I wont hold my breath for a couple of reasons ! RM is in a no lose situation with many fans and would not be berated for leaving us should we go down or if he stayed and we finished mid table in the Championship ! Many fans think we are a little League 2 side that has been punching above our weight when in fact at times we have been more than competitive in the Prem and with just a little bit of give sometimes tactically we could have remained in the top flight. We still might survive but I for one wont really relish another season of poor home performances and constant struggle !
I have said it several times now, Watson is Championship standard at the best ! I was shocked to see him back in the fold at weekend !
Positive: Villa game maybe easier as they could well be safe when you play themNegative: Have to get something at Arsenal which means players like Alcaraz who might have been risked at Wembley, possibly wont be as Arsenal is bigger than the Cup Final
Negative: Don’t expect any favours off WBA at Norwich. They were the worst team I have seen at City in a long time. They’re on their holidays already. Totally disinterested
Hence us beating them in the manner we did on Saturday !
Yes, this is Wigan Athletic and it wouldn’t surprise me if you were right !Afterall, there’s nowt to lose on Saturday; just play with freedom, sneak a win ( my prediction is 1-0 with either Gomez or Scharner scoring )against all odds ! Then a resurgent Latics goes on to stay up ! That would be proper Boys Own / Roy of the Rovers Stuff !
Fuckin hell Alasdair ! The weather is meant to be rainy tomorrow and I fear a day of being rained off from my windows round, please tell me they are wrong ! B)
Negatives- We have qualified for Europe so God knows how many games to play over the 46 league ones with a gossamer thin squad !
Positives- None !
why is that such a negative amongst people recently.
the more games the better.
I thought you didn’t subscribe to the two tired to play 2 games in a week theory ? ;)
I don’t subscribe to it but when your squad is as thin as a super sensitive rubber johnny then there must be cause for concern !

I honestly think its the “draw syndrome” that will send us down, I’ve a feeling we’ll draw toinght.
The way chav Pullis and Di Canio nearly swapped spit at the end shows draws will be enough for those above us.
A Sunderland Southampton draw looks a certain, , Sunderland no front line , Southampton not scored in 3.
QPR Newcastle banker draw,
We screw up against Swansea ( no Michu ) like we did against QPR then its down we go.
Hope I’m wrong but ……………..Hence a MUST WIN ;)
Our we down then in your view Griff ? I think we are because I don’t think we will beat Arsenal or Villa. This is based on what I have witnessed in the last 2 games ! :( Not the end of the World though is it ! ;)
you have called us for the drop every other month since as long as I can remember reading your posts.
your right to an opinion has been revoked :P
I was actually quite hopeful of survival over the last month or so but that hope has been drained from me watching the last 2 performances even though we did win on Saturday ! Two shockers and to be honest very lucky to win on Saturday ! You never know I guess with Wigan but to be going into the final two games having played like that in the previous two does not auger too well though does it ! :(

I have seen nothing in the last 180 mins of football that we have played to give me any hope of us surviving in the Prem or winning the FA Cup ! It really is that simple !
