Mark lawrenson said years ago on football focus: “you buy players good enough for that division.”

Maybe caldwell thinks certain players are not up to it in this league, & who knows, he might have players in mind & be close to deals.

& possibly alan hutton in if the rumours are true.

Latest rumour is that we are after alan hutton if the move for patterson collapses. Apparentely he is keen on joining up with his international colleague – caldwell.

It was El boring one who introduced us to the lone striker way of football and what a yawn his football was.

To be fair donny, it doesn’t matter whether we adopt 1, 2, 3 or more strikers during the game. Martinez style of football was slow & boring i agree. Caldwell on the other hand has adopted more or less the same tactics, formations etc; but at a much quicker pace.

No Super Stu, back in 1960 it was 2 3 5.
Wonder where Super Stu would have fit in to this 3 5 1, 5 3 1. Would he be the one or playing deep behind the one.

To be fair to super stu donny, & if i remember, ray mathias played super stuart barlow on one wing along with andy liddell on the other & simon howarth as a lone striker. Whether that formation was a 4 5 1 or a 4 3 3 im not too sure. But stuart barlow did play in a similar formation.

What about yourself mr page. Would yourself, phil daley & mark hilditch have managed with such a formation(s)?

Therein lies the problem of all these fancy Continental formations and tactics, Yann is a winger so to me if you are using out and out wide men then you need more than one target to hit so the lone striker makes it hard for him to deliver. If your gonna pack the midfield hoping for them to get on the end of balls from wide areas then use wing backs instead. The golden rule in any formation is to keep your shape which is much harder to do if you lose your striker or get a man sent off in these modern formations. This is when 4 4 2 wins out because it is a hell of a lot easier to adapt should anything go awry lose a player just sacrifice one striker enabling the team to still keep its shape where it matters most. Lose a man in these modern times and you end up with guys out of position or playing duel roles within a game. It is hard to call for the modern manager as to how he sets up coz teams do play so many different ways. In the late 70s and early 80s foreign teams couldn’t get the then European Cup off English clubs all playing with pacey wingers like Yann but they all had great twin target men as well, if only we could get back to those heady days.

Oops how I’ve managed to post this on this thread fook knows[/quote]

Haha! I was wondering that myself when i started to read your post.

FAO mutty. Out of interest, why did you stop supporting latics & choose sunderland.

I agree with donny. Wildschutt is NOT a wing-back.

I listened to the 1st half on wish as i was back in work at 4. Jake buxton was the co-commentator & i think it was he who stated that whilst wildschutt is exciting down the flanks, his final ball (& in some respects his decision making IMO) lets him down. Thats why he plays at this level & not in the premier league.

As for burn, i saw him for the first time vs brum & not since titus bramble have i been nervous about one of our defenders. I have yet to see buxton so cant comment on whether he is better or not.

But to be fair, we have signed a few new faces. It takes time for some players to find their feet at a new club, & what people have to remember is that we are no longer a league 1 club. The standard of football is a lot higher. We are playing clubs who the majority at a guess, have played in the premier league. Last season it took us a while to get going. Give the lads a chance.

Lots of amazing and humbling stories. Some truly inspirational performances that should motivate us all

Is it just me or is the olympics the sport equivalent of the x-factor

in reply to: Team GB #150102

The england football team should take note of team GB, especially how they go through so much blood, sweat, tears & desire just to win a medal – & not 100k (or more) per week.

Really felt for the taekwondo guy who missed out on a gold by 1 second. The way he was in tears during his interview. Can you see any of the england team doing that.

To be fair to wiganlatic88, i was thinking the same thing myself.

    Mid table consolidation this season.

    in reply to: Gomez? #150037

We now have the luxury of having the likes of morsy & colclough as squad players. The likes of jacobs as a quality sub when needed (ie tuesday night). The squad/team is coming along nicely now, & with the addition of a new striker, we’ll be reet.

As for gomez, & as another poster has said i thought tuesday’s game was lacking that kind of player who can win free-kicks or who can do the defence splitting passes (remember fa cup semi final vs millwall).

    in reply to: Gomez? #150013

My only concern is where he fits in as i presumed when we signed powell, that was the end of interest in gomez. Dont get me wrong i’m glad he is back as im a fan of his, but with powell, jacobs & colclough, i just cant see where he will fit in.

But FAO gary; please sign another striker

in reply to: James Perch & Josh Vela #149995

It would be good to have Perch back, but i’ve heard his wage demands are too high.
