Fil, i found your reply to my post very fascinating indeed. I apologise for getting it wrong about your length of time supporting the tics, but your statement about deciding to come down one day when weekends became available – !!!!!!!. It sounds like you was looking through the leagues looking for a football club & thought, “Ah, wigan look like they’re on the up, just had a recent promotion, doing well in div 1/championship, ambitions of getting into the prem. Yes , that is who i will support.”
You then say that fans such as yourself are more passionate & less accepting of our current predicament than the “older brigade”. Do you think we are happy about how this season has panned out & the soap opera circus that has accompanied it. I will bet the answer is a resounding no. But, us older supporters have seen times far worse than this , so whilst not happy, just simply accept it & move on. One example of a dark fay was when i chucked in 20p of my pocket money(a lot in those days) so i could contribute in paying a players wages. Years later i chucked in even more money to help keep this club (i love so much & am deeply passionate about) alive. & as for passion fil, you should sit next to me on a matchday. I bet i share the same passion now as i did as a 6 year old kid back in 1978.
The fact is fil, you are supposed to support a club through both its good times & its bad ones. You IMO have only witnessed good times throughout your tenure as a supporter, albeit this season & already you are spitting out your dummy & debating on renewing your season ticket. As JR said, you are a classic case of a JCL. Fil, a football club is for life, not just for xmas & certainly not for good times only.
BTW, welcome back griff!!
My brother and his mates had been going on since 82 and I tagged along one day, no scrolling through the leagues to see who was doing well or the like!!
As for the passionate stuff, I’m not sure how long you have to have been a supporter to be passionate but my point was that some of the more passionate fans speak out whilst some of the less passionate ones seem accepting of the slump but that is nothing to do with what they witnessed back in the really dark days. Some of the fans who have been on here venting their spleen have been fans for decades. They have also seen the dark days but this season wasn’t anything like the dark days, this was a completely different scenario!
Now the spitting out of the dummy as you choose to call it. I have said that I am not happy with the club’s latest decision which I happen to think will be another massive faux pas. I am not happy about what I have been told re reverting back to the Martinez way of football and so on the back of this season just gone I am not sure whether I will renew. One of my mates stopped coming on because he had a grievance with the way things were going and he is one of the 1982 crew, is he a JCL? Season tickets are expensive and when you fork out over £300 for something that with hindsight turned out to be in my opinion a complete waste of money then forgive me for being wary of wasting even more money! Just how many ‘Real fans’ are there then? Will it take a couple more relegations to find out? I was meant to jump ship as soon as we went down from the Prem according to some ‘Real fans’! I will say this one last time, I have not made a decision yet on renewing but the reason for this is not because we got relegated and I spat my dummy out as you say, it is because I too have a grievance with the club, just like my mate did and whether I have been coming 12 years or 32 years it is surely my prerogative! If I decide to walk away this season then I will be deemed a JCL but was I not one to start with? The thing is I have never been accepted as a proper fan despite buying a season ticket for 11 continuous seasons! I had no real affiliation with any other club prior to supporting Wigan, supporting is when you pay to see them is it not? and I definitely do not secretly follow one of the big time charlie clubs! I wonder how many out there leapt out of their chairs fist pumping the air when Ole Gunnar Solskjær stuck out his leg in the 99 Champions League final? Be honest and don’t say it was because they beat the Germans either! ha ha
At the end of the day, I could have said nothing and made my decision without any of you knowing but I have come on here for several years now, I was a member of the old version and so even though many have never thought of me as a fan, I do think that I am a fan and I have always spoke my mind and yeah sometimes it is utter bollocks that I spout because I flit between wind ups and sincerity, this is the latter!
Fil, I agree with you with regards the fact that it is completely irrelevant how long an individual has supported (or been a fan of) the tics. However, the gripe I have with you (& in some respects, with people who you know) is the fact that you & they have thrown in the towel or are about to by becoming disillusioned with how things are run at wigan athletic. As I wrote in my previous post, a football club is for life & as a supporter/fan, one must stick by that club through both the good times & bad. Anyway, whether you decide to stay or stop coming, it won’t matter one jot to me. I’ll be there no matter what.
& for the record, although I have been a wigan supporter all my life, I did pump the air with my fist when ole gunnar solskjar stuck out his leg, as I did when dudek pulled off his grobbelaar impersonations in 2005 & likewise when drogba put away the crucial penalty a couple of seasons ago. Basically, I support ALL English clubs in Europe irrespective of who they are – I even cheered on Bolton
in their Europa league campaign.Rochdull – brilliant!!!!
will have to think up a few more for this division!
Not depressed any more but tired of celebrating failure, watched that preston game yesterday and it was dreadful.& that vince was ONE game you viewed. Jees, i have watched many a so-called super-duper premier league game & have been bored absolutely sh1tless.

Minus 25 goal difference and just 39 goals scored in 46 matches! Only Blackpool scored fewer and that was only 3 less! Great season! I still find it difficult to understand why so many of our fans accepted everything that has gone on without a whimper? Blind faith at its most extreme ! I am not being funny but I will watching the transfer market with a very keen eye for the next few months because I do not want to waste ( very apt adjective! ) my money on a season ticket if I think it will be more of the same! A good idea could be to see how they start next season, say for the first 5 or 6 games before stumping up your hard earned cash because I have a feeling that this rot will continue!&, fil, if the rot continues i will still be supporting my club no matter what. Like JR i have seen periods a hell of a lot worse than this season. You should have been there in the early 90’s, which from what you have posted in the past you wasnt as you have only supported this club for (is it) 10 years now & have yet, haven’t seen the bad times. However, the idea of supporting a football team is to support it through its tough times as well as the good times. This season has been shit & if it continues next season i will still be there no matter what, & in my case, work permitting.
Maguire? Kim? Pennant? We should seriously go out of our way to sign those, especially the first 2.
Don’t ever recall coyle playing mclean up front. Still i will hold up my hands if im wrong.
If it was West Ham it would be a forgotten chapter. ;)Yes because west ham won us the world cup & sir trevor is held in high regard by the FA.
So because we have changed our manager the same bunch of players will immediately transform themselves into great ones overnight????
I admire your (misguided) optimism but face it we are relegated albeit not mathematically I grant you but to expect this dire bunch to suddenly hit blistering form overnight is beyond comic book expectations!
I’m sorry but it isn’t going to happen and pointless pontificating about the ridiculous notion that it might, face it ,it isn’t that bad when you do.I’ve followed the Tics since the Gordon Milne era; so you could say that I’ve experienced all of our recent history. And you know what; it’s been great !!!
Yes, I’m prepared for Div 1 and our next unwritten chapter, but it would be good if the unfashionable Latics could once again beat the odds and wave two fingers at the anti brigade; even if we secured our Championship status by three decimal places of goal difference.Hey, it’s only football; life eventually teaches you that. So whatever league we are in, I’ll still turn up to enjoy the social banter & a pint, and maybe three points now and again !
More or less the same here lostock but i’ve been following since the mcneill days of 1978. Yes i will be gutted & a bit upset if we go down, but like you say, life teaches you that at the end of the day – it is but just a game. Whatever happens, roll on next season.
And maybe we will start a new thread “How long before bottom four gary”
We are down for sure now. Thats it!!!
However, i am of the opinion we should send back all the loan players, but keep mckay & give him the funds to assemble a decent team at league 1 level to mount a promotion push next season. But most definitely get rid off fortune.45 minutes of trying to score, numerous corners and the usual worldy save from their keeper.
Bollocking at half time then a quick goal and complete head down from our players.
no fight and no heart and if we get past 40 points I will be surprised.
Worst wafc team ever?Mmmm! I still say the kenny swain team of 1993/94 was THE worst ever, but agree with your 1st paragraph
I think there’s more chance of Jewell coming back!Hope so!! He’d sort this bloody mess out.
