The exception that proves the rule ;)
I could be a real smart a**e here and point out that this expression which may seem meaningless is actually based on the older English use of the word “proof” to mean “test”. The exception TESTS the rule, which makes far more sense.
The other use of this is “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”.. ie the test…..is in the eating.
But I won’t be a smart a**e – and I won’t mention it. ;)

“Gate” endings come from the Norse word “gata” which means “street” – so Standishgate is Standish Street, Wallgate is Wall Street.
As for the origin of the name the attached is from the local archaeological society, who at least should have some idea:
