We aren’t going to discuss individual mmebers here, either past or present. But as I was recently reminded that this was a football forum, then I will just make a general football-related point.

Referees are vital in football for the good of the game. They are there to ensure the match is played according to the rules, and to make sure things don’t develop into a free-for-all that will actually break not just the rules of the game, but also the law.

Players can get into trouble with the referee in one of two ways. Firstly if they don’t abide by the rules. This can either be a one-off major transgression, or a series of lesser but constant breaches. We have all seen referees pointing all over the pitch before issuing a card. And of course the ultimate sanction is to be ejected from the game.

But secondly, players can find themselves in instant hot water by arguing with the referee, by trying to undermine his/her authority, but most of all of accusing them of cheating. Many of you know Dave Orrell, local ref, who is a good friend of mine. He once said that if a player called him incompetent he’d shrug his shoulders and probably agree; if he called him a cheat then it was an instant red card.

Referees have to distinguish between what is an actual transgression of the rules, and what is robust challenging. How often have we leapt up for a foul, that actually wasn’t, or laughed at our opponents doing the same? The referee makes those calls. The thing is that everyone knows how to do it better – but no-one wants to do it.

Heskey was of course the master of the nod down to Henri Camara, but got loads of stick because he didn’t score so many himself.
In my footballing formative years of course John Toshack was nodding them down for Kevin Keegan.
I too was really impressed by young Mr Sharpe in his interview. A wise head on young shoulders, which of course bodes well for the club’s long term future.

Why has the original “moderator” thread been locked?

GL your reply is wrong i suggest you check again you will see that the subjects switch quite often, i think an explanation to the members as to why and how it is possible unless you are a moderator.

I have no idea what “i think an explanation to the members as to why and how it is possible unless you are a moderator” actually means. And yes, I am losing patience. I don’t have to put up with this nonsense.

EDIT – Are you referring to the subject title? When you click reply the subject title is there, which can be altered by the person replying. Not just moderator.

            Wrong again.

It ceased to be about Joe Hart in the second post:

“Mika from Boavista wont be signing for the Mackems either. apparently the paperwork was not completed in time, yeah right!

Ha ha ha amateurism at its very best.

Even the Norwich keeper turned them down!”

I think I did say “I’m not asking you to come along”. But facts have never been a strong point.

I know where I’ll be to, I’ve done the poxy grounds, with no facilities, no crowds, poor parking, terrace altercations etc etc. watching my own team for nearly two decades. I’ll be buggered if I go back to that watching a club I don’t support.

Sorta get where you are coming from, but the Fulham game is far more of a priority, even if a none league team from Ashton was playing Barcelona. ;)

No probs to me, John. Each to their own, and to make their call. Obviously Latics is number 1 priority for most, and usually myself. But I’m going to give a bit of a shout for Ashton that day.

And when they get knocked out of the cup you can jump back off the bandwagon and crawl back to the DW.

Why haven’t you been going to watch Ashton every week?

I know where i’ll be that Saturday!

Good for you. But you know what? I really don’t care what you think. You do what you want. I really really don’t care one way or the other. I’m not asking you to come along.

Watching Ashton isn’t exactly “jumping on a bandwagon”, but perhaps it’s giving a bit of support to grassroots football that is sadly neglected by the powers that be. But you wouldn’t understand that.

Now get back to trawling through the rugby forums, and the WEP, and anywhere else where you can get hot under the collar about a team and sport that you claim to despise.

I, however, will be on the coach to Norwich next Tuesday night. See you there?

As for myself have decided that given the choice between watching Latics v Fulham yet again, or my very local club in the biggest game in their history, then it’s got to be Brocstedes for me.

As a Season Ticket Holder, you’ll be counted in the “official” attendance for the Fulham game, so you can legitimately claim to be in two places at once! ;)
It’s not a bad shout Abram, I know on Sunday the chairman said to me if they pulled the likes of Salford they may look at moving it away.

Halifax (who drew with 10 men at Salford last night) get 1500-2000 at home and reckon they’ll bring 500+ to Brocstedes. Should be interesting at the one turnstile, one man bar, one man pie hatch, 3 seat deep stand!

Parking is going to be fun too :)

Talking to a few people last night. They expect about 400 from Halifax.

No announcement on the Official site yet of the signing and any windfall we may be getting.

Why should they? They don’t give details of any other confidential contract arrangements – and that’s what this is. It’s “commercial in confidence”.

How many, watching England bore the living shite out of us last night thought Roberto Martinez? It seems that passing the ball to death is the only way these days. New manager same old pedestrian slow tactics. Kane isolated no service now where have I seen that before?.Can anyone honestly say that the game excites them today? Cant wait for the day that 4 4 2 makes a comeback and this lone striker bollocks disappears up its own arse.

Modern football is played to avoid defeat as opposed to playing to win.
And yet simple maths shows that a win and a loss is better points-wise than two draws.

Only prob is it’s when Latics are at home. :(
