With Latics crowds on average double Worriors crowds,FA Cup final,8 seasons in the Premier League etc etc…..
Is it not time this rediculous `media myth` that Wigan is a rugby town was put to an end once and for all.
Wigan is a football town with a rugby league.

Someone is going to either –
a) come and point out that our crowds are not “double” those of the other lot and actually Wiganers watching both teams is only about a thousand or so higher, in our favour, and that Wigan is actually a “sports town”, or something.
or
b) the Egg will throw a massive strop and close the thread before anyone else gets the chance to reply.
What exactly does `rugby town` mean?
If it means you have a rugby club that gets approximately 8000 fewer fans than the local football team then yes,Wigan like Huddersfield,Leeds,Northampton,Leicester,Manchester United etc…………Wigan is deffo a rugbee town/city!

wigan doesnt resemble a “rugby town” even on a friggin worriers match day……didn’t see one rugby top or heard anyone mention their was a game on in the pub on friday!!!!

Latics Fan in australia here. The general feeling around here is that wigan IS a rugby town.. however most people in oz wouldnt know much bout Wigan.
What is the difference is crowd attendances etc between the 2 codes in wigan?
To be fair to the Rugby they do get some large crowds when they play the likes of St Helens/Warrington any other time it can be quite poor, couple of weeks ago when they played Widnes they had less than 8’000 on for a super league game. our average attendance at the DW is around the 19’000 mark but that does include the away following.
we need 34k in the next 2 home games to break the 20k average barrier….the villa game will be full (23k, as whelan only give them 3k) and the swansea game will have a decent crowd even though it’s on sky and swans will bring 1k
if you take away the good friday bank holiday day tripper crowd, our lodgers would be averageing 12.9k approx……..thought it was a rugby town ???????
when you consider they have been top of their top flight all season in the only recognized top flight RL league in the northern hemisphere, i think their crowds are pish poor TBH
we’ve been in a relegation battle most of season and we’re way ahead (crowds wise) of them!

Cant even believe after all these years that people are still harping on about the old thugby town b*ll*cks. Both sports in one town, one higher profile than the other, one has more tradition. Kids will grow up choosing either an easy existance with egg chasing, easy to celebrate success, albeit minor. And the other supporting a volitile sport where the Latics are punshing above its weight and winning cup finals every time they win…
As a fan of both teams in Wigan, my opinion fwiw is that the town can accommodate both teams and to have both teams playing in the top flight of both sports can only benefit the town.
In my opinion Latics need to win the fa cup to encourage that next crop of youth to get on board and follow the latics and the rugby need to also win a trophy to again encourage the young crop of fans to come through the turnstile.
I for one have encouraged my kids to support both teams because they both represent Wigan.
Sorry for a rant on my first post.
