Bradford City take the competition seriously; so do Swansea.

We obviously have to set the bar a little higher being Champions of England.

No we got a bye because we finished higher up in the league than QPR. Reading have also got a bye as they also finished above QPR.

?!?! Non.
Most pl teams go in at second round.
18 June 2013 at 12:15 am #116444From Wikipedia.
Since 1996–97, teams involved in European competition during the season have received a bye to the third round; the remaining Premier League teams enter at the second round, and the remaining Football League teams enter at the first round.[6] If the number of byes causes an odd number of teams to enter a round, another team may be given a bye.
18 June 2013 at 12:20 am #116446Due to the odd number someone got a bye to third and reading must go in at 2nd round.

So why do Reading get a bye, are they in Europe?

What a journey!18 June 2013 at 3:47 am #116462if its an odd number the next ranked team in pl who are not in Europe get a bye to the third. so I assume the next buy into the 2nd round gets passed to the the highest ranking relegated team. as we are athe one with the bye into the third it goes to reading below us.

Once you take out the Europe teams, and factor in the number of entries there will be some more byes in the First Round. I can see nothing in the regulations which say which teams get the byes (they don’t appear to be drawn), so I would assume as Salford says that it’s based on league position.
19 June 2013 at 2:00 am #116537When Birmingham got into Europe and were relegated they had a prelim round where the Conference winners played the Conference play-off winners in a one off game. Think that game was Crawley V AFC Wimbledon (2 southern teams). Think they’ve had to give Reading a bye because the same thing this year would have meant Mansfield v Newport (Northern v Southern team)
19 June 2013 at 3:12 am #116559There are 16 ties in the Third Round. The 32 clubs in the draw include 7 English clubs playing in European competitions plus 25 clubs who progress from the second round.
Working backwards, last season there were 50 clubs in the draw for the Second Round, including 13 PL clubs + 2 highest ranked clubs (Blackburn and Bolton) + 35 winners from the First Round.
There were 70 clubs in the First Round; 24 L2 + 24 L1 + 22 CH clubs.
This season, the 50 clubs in the draw for the Second Round will be 14 PL teams + 1 highest ranked team (Reading) + 35 winners from the First Round.
Once again there are 70 clubs in the First Round.

Champions of England? You seem to have posted this on a Wigan Athletic message board as opposed to a Manchester United one.
