3 sent off as Zulte Waregem stun Anderlecht in 4-3 classic!

Early days in the Belgian Pro League, but Zulte Waregem have been impressive.

A real test awaited them with a meeting with John van den Brom’s mighty Anderlecht side. Within 18 minutes, the hosts were behind, Sacha Kljestan opening the scoring. Thorgan Hazard’s stunning strike levelled the scores in the 33rd minute. As you might have guessed, he’s the younger brother of Eden. And like his bro he belongs to Chelsea – who have farmed him out to Zulte for the season.

An excellent first half finished level. A stupendous second half was awaiting.

Cheikhou Kouyate contributed to that upping of the excitement. His challenge on Habib Habibou led to a red card – and a penalty. No second goal for Hazard though, just an excellent save with his trailing feet by Silvio Proto. Not to worry, Olafur Skulason around 30 seconds later putting the hosts in front.

Less than six minutes later and it was 2-2. Matias Suarez with the goal. Skulason was back in the the thick of the action with 20 minutes to go. This time though, the Icelandic midfielder’s contribution was not so welcome, as far as Zulte were concerned. 2-2 the score – and ten against ten. It couldn’t last.

Karel D’Haene headed Zulte back in front in the 75th minute. Three minutes later though, and Demy de Zeeuw made it 3-all. The goals kept flying in – so did those elbows. Following Skulason’s lead, Olivier Deschacht was next to employ that joint illegally.

Three red cards and we hadn’t finished with the scoring just yet. The 91st minute and Franck Berrier headed in what would prove to be the winner in front of a quite disbelieving crowd.

4-3 the final score to Zulte who stay within four points of leaders Standard Liege. If only every game of football was like this.
