Thius is what whelan has tried so far to get people to turn up
      Got us in the prem.
      Kept us there.
Probably has given us our best ever team.
Got us a very popular manager.
Gives us the cheapest admission in the league.
      ……and on saturday.
      £1 admission
add to that the 3 for £30 deal

and still we can only pull 16000

      Now my question.
You are the chairman of WAFC.
What would YOU do to increase the gates, or is it simply a lost cause.?

Let everyone in for free, if you can afford to let people in for a pound why not free?

It cost me more for a burger yesterday then to get in the next three matches, if people are not goin to come at that price they are not going to come at all lets be honest.

Right so 16,000 home fans on a Sunday afternoon against Fulham.

Against Sunderland & Birmingham ,more attractive opposition & on a Saturday I would expect we’ll attract 500 – 1000 more home fans.

Added to the larger away following of Birm ( 3 – 3500 ) & Sunderland ( 4 -4500 ) and that could give us gates of over 20,000 for both games.

Hardly a lost cause !!!

My guess before the game was actually “about 14,000”

Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised with 16,000.

Over 15,000 home fans, hardly any of who would have been ‘casuals’ or day tripper, types.

And it’s getting towards Christmas with blokes who are under the thumb getting dragged out shopping, and the traffic going into Wigan through Goose Green yesterday was very busy.

I’m very happy with that crowd.

Season ticket holders will moan. And I wouldn’t blame them. An offer like, buy a full price adult ticket and get a half price shirt, or something like that.

No, probably not, and indeed Whelan must wonder what else the club has to do to fill it.

Assuming that an extra 2000 people paid £1 yesterday, it must be worth experimenting with free tickets just to see the impact it would have. The extra £2k earned yesterday isn’t exactly life changing so wouldn’t really be missed.

You would then, of course, have season ticket holders complaining that they are being ripped off again.

I remember when we were in the Second Division (now league one) and we played Bradford away. I think there was about 8,000 on. (Boring nil-nil draw)

The Tuesday before, Bradford had done a ‘Free to get in’ deal for a game.

They got a crowd of 19,000 on. How mad is that?

But you just can’t see it happening at Latics. Far too many people who’s grandad came from ‘Scotty Road’ so they follow Liverpool or Everton (in the pub, natch) or ‘Man Yoo’ fans. “Coz thee win fings”

The club as released a statement thanking the Wigan public for their support at the game against Fulham.Saying that the home support as increased for every single home game this season.and to be going virtually head to head with the biggest game of the season on tv.
Also after the dissapointing result against Portsmouth and it also states that the home support against Fulham was the fifth highest for eighteen months and only the visits of Liverpool,Aresnal,Villa and Man Utd have attracted higher levels of home support.

You can find this statement on another latic forum don’t know if i can mention it

we lost alot more fans than we realise after the first season when the prices went up and the shine and novelty of top flight football wore off. Our attendances arent great but theyre not bad either, i dont buy the its a rugby town because the same applies to hull and they pull attendances of 25000. I think that we have a hardcore base of 12000 home fans who if we stay in the prem will be there every week then theres another 6000 floating who pick and choose the games. People in this working class town have less income to spend on things like football when it can be quite expensive(despite current offers) and i dont blame them for not wanting to spend so much when bills need paying.

To be honest when attendances are the main factor in where you finish in the league il worry but until then lets have our small crowds and keep taking the p*** by beating the teams with the big crowds. I think were one of a small group of clubs who still feel like a “family” club and its refreshing to see and be part of.

Rings a bell that statement, parakeet wasn’t it in his former guise?

Sure he used to get hammered for it.

You have to remember that Hull is a city and not a town. They have a considerably larger population than us, no bigger clubs within 40 miles, and have seventy-odd years start on Wigan in the football league – ample time to build up a bigger fanbase.

You would need someone like Warrington or Halifax to get a football team promoted to the league, then see if they could discard the stigma of being a rugby town and get an average home-gate of 18k plus to see an accurate comparison of how well we’ve done in that regard.

In my opinion, we’re doing pretty well. I agree that we have the ‘family club’ tag, along with people like Fulham, Boro (fingers crossed for a speedy recovery at the expense of their black and white neighbours) and Blackburn, so who gives a monkey’s if we have have ‘sh1t ground no fans’ every week.
