I hope you will agree with me and say a big thank you to Sir DW for his donation too the Billy Boston statue after all it takes an football mon to make up the numbers to get this statue going then again it’s am rugby town after all
FUND-raising for the statue of Wigan rugby league legend Billy Boston is in the “home straight” thanks to a huge donation from Dave Whelan.
The Wigan Athletic life president made the tremendous gesture this week on behalf of the club and its fans, marking the first anniversary of the launch of the appeal by handing over a cheque for £33,000.
The amount is a third of the overall target of £100,000 and almost doubles what was already in the pot to £67,000.
Those behind the Billy Boston Statue Trust charity now say this puts them well on course to having it built, with the location already revealed as Believe Square in Wigan town centre.
Supporters have spent that last 12 months holding various fund-raisers, raising thousands to put into the pot.
And the additional funding from the recently retired Latics chairman provides the biggest boost yet.
Pity the 100,000 who used to go to Wembley couldn’t chip in :woohoo: :woohoo:
Looks well when a League 1 Football club owner is having to cough up a third of the money for a Wigan rugby legend’s statue!
How much has Lenagan given?
An absolute insult from Wigan rugby to one of its greats, bloody joke of a club!
Now tell us that Wigan rugby isn’t skint!
1 July 2015 at 1:41 pm #143000What makes you think they’re skint?
They’ve posted a profit in 3 of the last 4 years.
1 July 2015 at 5:30 pm #143008They are not skint. The TV income pretty much covers the salary cap, then you have the income from sponsorship, merchandise and ticket sales which will more than cover the salaries for the remaining staff and rent for using DWs stadium. Then of course there is the money that has come in from selling players (Hansen, Hock) and sometimes getting them back for way less (Tomkins x2, Mossop).
That said, it is a grand gesture by Mr Whelan, and its a shame that 35 hasn’t included the text from the whole article, choosing to gloss over the positive bits and instead copying and pasting the comments from a poster with multiple identities on that site who has just about united everyone in their utter contempt for him. Even his “son” has posted telling him to grow up, get out of his pyjamas and stop spending every minute of every day on the site trolling.

1 July 2015 at 9:19 pm #143013As an aside, how much have the Latics’ fans raised towards the DW statue? Is it anywhere close to £34,000?Still in the concept stage, old chap. Nothing to actually contribute to yet – unlike Billy Boston’s.
I remember Billy at Springfield Park presenting Simon Haworth with a Welsh cap.

I remember that Garswood, just glad Denny Landzaat didn’t get international recognition.
PS I wonder if Simon Haworth had a clue who he was???

4 July 2015 at 11:24 pm #143059The sad multiposting individual concerned has been outed on the WEP.
There are suggestions he may frequent this site. Seeing as he left school in 1984, then he could well have been following the laughtics for 35 years or more.
