Have a look at the photos on the Latics website:

      http://www.wiganlatics.co.uk/news/article/deadline-day-signings-kellett-vuckic-and-hendry-in-training.-2666612.aspx

and a whole load of them look as if they are wearing sports bras outside their football shirts. The garment isn’t all that dissimilar to Ali’s.

What is going on? What are they? Do I need one, signed, preferably?

Not sure if your post was tongue in cheek, but here goes…they are fitness monitors. The device at the back collates data such as body mass and heart rate etc. They will take those bibs off and the data from the monitor will be downloaded onto a computer to give a profile on how fit the player is. I think they have to wear them away from the training ground so that the the club can keep a check on their lifestyle, rest time, nutrition etc.
Just think if these things had been around when the likes of George Best, Stan Bowles and Frank Worthington played. They would have plugged in their monitor after a couple of days away from the training ground and blown the PC to smithereens.

I doubt very much that these monitors are worn out of football time so to speak!

It was slightly tongue in cheek, but also asked from a point of complete ignorance, so thanks for telling me what it’s all about. I didn’t think they were that well endowered!!

You’re right. They don’t wear them after training.

Was talking to a former player in the Spa at Aspull, I asked him about the gadget on his back and he explained what it was. The first thing they do when they report for training is plug um into a laptop or similar that downloads the data for the period since the last training session.

The technology these days is unbelievable, I think that footballers are so finely tuned that it just needs one little blip and they could be out for weeks.

He must have forgotten to hand his in when he left the training ground! They are not used outside of football!

It was most likely a spaceman he was talking to not a spa man

Don’t you think these modern day footballers are over analysed?

Ice baths, super fit athletes, warm ups, warm downs…. but yet more than ever (so it seems) they seem to get injuries?

Too much lean & not enough fat

And yet most coaches/managers seem to let it pass them by that some players can’t pass a ball 5 yards to a player in the same coloured shirt.

When I say outside of football I mean that they don’t monitor players away from training or actually playing unless of course there is some underlying heart condition that may need monitoring but that would be done via a doctor. It ain’t some ‘Big Brother’ device that tells his employers what he has been up to!!

Now that is very true….. Having oodles of speed seems to make up for lack of talent these days.

I want to wear one of those tops when I’m watching Wigan play Chesterfield (or anyone for that matter). I’d love to know what happened to my blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar levels this afternoon. And I reckon I’m pretty fit … (and so does Ali)!!

An alarm goes off at the training ground when they rock up at Nandos or The Bubble Room in Alderley Edge.
