After Japan beat South Africa in the Union World Cup, BBC Sport are having a vote as to the best shock ever. Surprise surprise, the 2013 FA Cup Final hasn’t made the list.
Wigan losing to Sheffield has though in 1998.
21 September 2015 at 9:32 pm #144858Was Japan beating South Africa a shock?
Which Sheffield was it United or Wednesday and which win was that against us. Don’t think that would rate as much of a shock.
I must admit though Latics beating City in the FA Cup final was one of the biggest ever shocks in sporting history.21 September 2015 at 10:52 pm #144859Two Premiership clubs competed in the 2013 FA Cup final and even though Wigan were the underdogs it’s not like they were League Two opposition! A shock/surprise win but not a total bolt out of the blue!
21 September 2015 at 11:23 pm #144860But surely a bigger shock than us getting beat by one of the Sheffield sides Fil.

I’ve no idea, you will have to ask the sports journalists who came up with that sensationalism! Wigan beating City was a pleasant surprise but not a massive sporting shock! Not sure about the Sheffield game being mentioned,I would have thought that the Canvey Island defeat was more shocking! Now if San Marino beat Germany that would be a footballing shock!
22 September 2015 at 2:54 am #144864I believe they meant Sheffield Eagles victory over Wigan in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final in 1998
22 September 2015 at 10:48 am #144865I believe they meant Sheffield Eagles victory over Wigan in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final in 1998And there was me thinking this was a football forum!
22 September 2015 at 12:34 pm #144866This must have been mentioned?
22 September 2015 at 12:47 pm #144868Back to the football. I would say that Sunderland beating Leeds in the early 70’s was a far bigger shock than Wimbledon beating Liverpool!
Greece winning the Euros in 2004 will also be a popular vote one would think!22 September 2015 at 1:13 pm #144870Wasn’t expecting anyone to bite at Donny’s post but there you have it. Good haul.
Always thought Denmark winning Euro 92 when they only got in as qualifiers Yugoslavia were in turmoil and beating Germany in the final was a fair achievement.
22 September 2015 at 4:30 pm #144873Colchester beating Leeds was a big one and Sutton beating Coventry.
Remember the day Colchester beat Leeds we were at Fleetwood away. Someone stamped on Col Roughleys shiny Docs and nicked his scarf. Remember Col giving chase and retrieving his scarf.22 September 2015 at 5:07 pm #144875It wasnt me that brought up Sheffield

I have never got it either fil but the other week on the Beeb there was a programme all about the greatest cup upset. Interviews with the players and everything, baffling.
