How would fans feel if this happened?
Mods – Have put this on the non-football board as well so feel free to delete it from here if you don’t think it is relative.
10 December 2009 at 6:45 am #14967I would personally find it difficult to support a club some 100 mile away as the whole basis of my support for Latics (as i’ve said many times on this board and the rugby board) is that they’re my home town team and it makes me proud to come from Wigan when people from around the world recognise us. If we moved 100 mile away i’d no longer have that.
On the other hand if another club was set up (as afc wimbledon were) i’m not sure I could support them despite them being my home town side as they aren’t the club i’ve supported through thick and thin for 15/16 years. I’d ‘follow’ them yes, but could I ‘support’ them? I’m not sure.
So….what say you? Would you prefer a Chairman who has taken us to the PL and put us on the map, or one who rips the heart and soul away from the town, and yourself?

MK Dons are not Wimbledon, they’ve simply tried to take back what is theirs.
If Whelan or anyone moved the club out of Wigan, then they stop being Wigan Athletic and they can piss off. It’d be the only option to form another club, although the problem would be that there’s too many people about who’d talk about it but no-one would be prepared to put the work in
10 December 2009 at 3:11 pm #14981The sad fact is that if Whelan pulled the plug on the club they would go under, and more than liekly come back in a reformed state and play in Leigh or somewhere.
Still Whelan out
10 December 2009 at 11:47 pm #15016This is the kind of lunatic we have at our club. Sooner see Whelan go and then end up as an amateur club.
11 December 2009 at 12:33 am #15023One why would we go under, yes we would end up down the leagues, but we would survive as we did in the 80s and early 90s with only 1300 in attendance, and yes we prob would only have 2-3 thousand watching, i think people forget we played teams like bury rochdale etc years ago when they also only got 2500 watching and had no sugar daddy, and guess what everbody they are still here, so take your blinkers off and dont be so worried because we will survive, all be it without the millions, and the over paid players and the flash cars, :( ;)

11 December 2009 at 11:31 am #15046Am sure someone on here knows the exact details, but we were close to going under when Whelan took over. As a club we are financially punching above our weight and losing money year after year, we dont own our ground and have a core following of about 12k, if whelan were to go this would plumit again and with the costs of wages commited to we would surely drop like a stone in the leagues and no doubt end up going under. Simple economics if clubs like Leeds and Charlton, Norwich, Southampton cant survive without premiership money.
11 December 2009 at 1:55 pm #15060Wigan ath do own the dw stadium…….
11 December 2009 at 2:20 pm #15064What i am saying is that whelan will sell/leave one day so why worry, enjoy it now, and if we do go down, we will again enjoy the ride, but we will still survive, with or without him.
11 December 2009 at 3:11 pm #15066Excuse me for questioning the validity of Widepedia ! He did plan to hand over to the club to guarantee the legacy.. Rubbish Whelan !
11 December 2009 at 6:55 pm #15068if whelan were to go this would plumit again and with the costs of wages commited to we would surely drop like a stone in the leagues and no doubt end up going under.I’m not 100% sure, but I dont think Whelan is putting any of his own money into your club any more. The crowds will not generate a massive income (nor would they if you got 25K every week) – its the sponsorship, tv money and transfer profits that keep the club going. All Whelan does these days is make spending decisions which prevent him from bankrolling the club.
True about Norwich, Saints etc, but they all spent too much in a futile attempt to get back up – in Southampton’s case I think they also had that new ground to pay back loans on, something that Wigan doesnt have to worry about. Also its a long while since either club flogged a player for a large profit. Wigan seem to be able to do that at least twice a year.
When Whelan sells up, then whoever stumps up the cash will not want to end up like Southampton, and will initially invest whatever it takes to keep you where you are.
Y’all be fine.
