Amidst the gloom and despondency you may have missed one footballing triumph last night when Ashton Athletic won the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, by beating Radcliffe Borough (of the NPL) at Bolton by 2-1 with a 91st minute winner.
The trophy was won by Latics in 1936, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1960, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1977 and 1978. Recent winners have included Chorley, AFC Fylde, Southport, Accrington and Morecambe, so for Ashton playing in the 9th level to win it is a great achievement.
Oh – and I had a chat with Roberto Martinez who was there watching (Graeme Jones’ son plays for Ashton, although he was only on the bench).
