I think there is a lad on here who is a referee or if he’s not he’s fairly up with the rules of the game. Maybe he, or anyone else, for that matter can help with this query?
A ball is played into the box and as a striker is about to shoot he is taken down. The referee is about to point to the spot but stalls a second as the ball has broken kindly to another player who seems to have an easy task of shooting into an empty net. He decides to play advantage but unfortunately the player somehow manages to roll the ball wide of the post. Am I right in saying he can’t call play back and give the penalty he was about to blow for when the first player was fouled?
8 January 2019 at 6:56 pm #174956This actually happened to Latics away at Preston a good few years back. Our player was brought down by their keeper, Lucas, in the area, only for the ball to run to another of our players, who rolled it wide.
Ref then gave a penalty, which Barlow scored. It was the day he got a hat trick.
8 January 2019 at 7:19 pm #174957That’s interesting as that didn’t happen in a game I attended at the weekend, a local amateur game involving my club. In this case the referee didn’t give the penalty saying ‘he couldn’t change his initial advantage decision after the advantage has been executed and lost’!!!
8 January 2019 at 7:57 pm #174958By the letter of the law, the referee cannot call the play back to give the foul if they have played advantage to allow a shot on goal.
VAT is right in that it did happen for Latics against Preston & that’s why their manager went nuts (if i remember rightly, at the time the game was 1-1 & a tight affair)
However, a lot of referees will call play back & use the excuse that there wasn’t enough time between the foul & the effort on target for them to either blow for the foul or to play/signal/shout an advantage – that’s why most ref’s will delay an advantage call several seconds.
It happened to the team I’m involved with now in the Vase last season – leading 1-0 in the lead up to half time they play the ball over the top & their striker gets free only to be pulled back & down by our centre half just inside the penalty area. He still shoots however which beats the keeper only to land on top of the goal and at that point (several seconds after the foul) the ref awards a penalty which they score to make it 1-1.
As secretary I’m allowed to go & speak with the ref after the game & I asked him to explain that decision as I felt it had cost us the game (we lost 3-2 to a goal in injury time in the 2nd half!!) & the ref’s excuse was (as above) that he didn’t play an advantage but that the foul, shot & miss were so close together that he gave the penalty at the earliest point he could.
I told him that he was talking rubbish & that he knew what he’d done because he didn’t caution or send off our player despite him denying a goal scoring opportunity so even if he hadn’t played the advantage he wasn’t applying the laws of the game as we should have been down to 10 men – he didn’t get a very good mark from me!!When I was a referee I once got pulled up for playing an advantage just outside the box & then awarding a free kick after the shot had been put over. I was also told by assessors & coaches not to play advantage in the penalty area
So in your case Travis, the ref was right
8 January 2019 at 8:04 pm #174959Was 1-0 actually at the time to PNE.
We equalised from the spot and went on to score 3 in the 2nd half as their sub keeper had a nightmare.

Having watched that, the referee could legitimately argue that he played advantage after the foul but that the advantage never occurred because Barlow was being challenged by the time he got the ball & that challenge meant he couldn’t get a clean shot away – and not that he only pulled it back when he missed
8 January 2019 at 8:53 pm #174963It was the game Tepi miskicked for Preston and Barlow rolled ball into empty net.
The days when we scored for fun.
8 January 2019 at 10:18 pm #174970I know Barlow got three, but what a geat header that was from Simon Hawarth.(sp)

I always said about Haworth that if he had no time to think, just act on instinct, then he could be brilliant.
If he had time to use what was between his ears – then he failed.
