Actually this achievment is up there with the most remarkable that I have seen Wigan achieve in my happy 10 years. Yes, there were great escapes, there were amazing games, there were league wins and there was the Cup.
But to have the club:
More than decimated of good staff,
Lose a strong established cohesive team and see it almost disbanded over night,
lose a host of prize assets sold off,
change managers – how many times
sit at the bottom or near the bottom of the table for most of the season,
not know what was happening from one day to the next
and you’ll be able to add to the list.
To go through all of that to securing safety by a reasonable margin before the last day is really amazing.
It says a lot for all the staff that remain. I’d imagine it was a mighty hard job to motivate a disparate group of possibly despondent players for whom there was possibly little consequence if we stayed up or not, into being so driven. Morale, at times must have been rock bottom.
Leam, the master of the understatement says “I don’t know what all the fuss is about”. Well I do. It is blinkin, bloody amazing.
Of course we must not forget where some credit must go. The fans. Through thick and thin, I bet many of us felt like giving up (I did). The fans made magnificent banners, collected a phenomenal amount of money and just kept hoping and believing.
Well done everyone – the staff, the players, and the fans!! It’s a great day.
If its been like that for me, you lot have had a great ride.2 May 2021 at 7:16 am #192508It’s on par with Jewell achievements which was the catalyst of all things to come.
Now we need the new owners to back Richardson. I’m not saying “Throw money at it”, but I think after June we will have about 5 players officially on the books.
Another thing, do not fcukin allow these under 18 lads get cherry picked, sort them contracts of some sort,
They are our future
2 May 2021 at 7:39 am #192511I wonder how many of the first team have been offered a job next season if we stayed up, and what kind of bonus they were offered? 10 days in Bahrain when the borders open in a posh palace?
Doesn’t matter to me – it worked.
