After watching us last night, I actually feel a relief for Shaun Maloney.
When you look at what he was having to work with, and was it his choice of players we brought in, or Rioch’s?I’d like to know. Because if he was doing the job with his hands tied like that, and you do have to wonder who had the final say on who came in because there’s a rumour going around that he was setting out targets he wanted to go for and being told “no, we go for him instead”
Might not be true, but if it is I actually feel a relief for Shaun in that he’s got out. I know the Director Of Football thing is a common one these days. But unless you are both singing from the same hymn sheet, it seldom works out great.
A manager HAS to be allowed to manage. Would any manager worth their salt allow their decision not to be the final one over signings? Think Ferguson, Warwick, Dalglish, Allardyce, Moyes etc. Would they allow themselves to be overriden? Not a chance. And nor would I.
So if Shaun Maloney was having to work like that then I hope he can move on in management and not have to work like that. If he was having to work like that, then I feel sorry for him and he’s been made a scapegoat.

As with most of these sackings, the next guy’ll get a decent budget to form his own team and Shaun will wonder why they didn’t just do that for him
Away a lot, but always watching

Regards, Danson and lapdog (Gregor) Rioch.”
James McClean5 March 2025 at 1:22 pm #205283I have my doubts about Ryan Lowe coming to Wigan based on the funds Maloney was given.
Lowe left Preston after a season of up and down form and although he doesn’t site it Chris Hemmings made a statement to the press after Preston lost their last 5 at the end of last season (but a 10th place finish) Hemmings said to press that it was “Totally unacceptable” which hurt Lowe and to me it looks like it was the straw that broke the camels back because Lowe resigned after 1 game into this season.
My point is, he needs the full support from the owner but not only that the financial backing.
Without funds Lowe will fail and he’ll know that because the quality of player we have or try to recruit free and cheap is simply not good enough to get out this League
5 March 2025 at 1:36 pm #205285On one hand I can feel some sympathy for Shaun.
On the other hand he didn’t help his own cause, by adopting a defensive, possessive game plan for the majority of games. Even if the squad was not his first choice, he could have still explored with different tactics & styles to get the best out of the players. He didn’t even experiment in friendlies or Mickey Mouse cup games
We’ll never know the truth.5 March 2025 at 1:57 pm #205287The amount of players we will have leaving in the summer, if they do appoint a man they promise to back, itw going to cost them a hell of a lot more than this season.
Yet if we had only just spent about 2 million on 3 or 4 half decent signings to give us a strong spine, we could’ve pissed this league as the majority of teams are very ordinary. But next season we’re going have to have a new team put together again and it can’t be for buttons like this season. Hopefully we’ve learned our lesson IF we manage to stay up. If we do the same again, we’ll end up struggling again.
We will have an idea by who they appoint whether they’re going to back him or not. Lowe, Evatt (I know) then yes, they’re obviously offering backing. But if it’s Richardson or some novice, I feel it’s because they’ve offered to come with no specific budget on the table.Nobody worth their salt will take this job on without knowing they’ll be backed in the summer. Only watching last night and it was obvious how limited we are.
The only players who I think are good enough, are:
Tickle…and he will go.
Kerr
Aimson
Carragher
Taylor…worth signing.
J Smith
M Smith…we’ve missed him.The others are either not good enough or I’m not sure if they are…McHugh for example. Cal Mac is finished.
It’s a far bigger rebuild job than this season was, mainly because we went so heavy on loans and freebies this season. Shot ourselves in the foot really. Saving pennies is going to cost us more.
5 March 2025 at 2:34 pm #205290Agree with a lot of what’s been posted and it’s dead simple. The players we’ve recruited in general are w###. Whoever was responsible mere mortals
like us won’t find out till some future autobiography.Maloney certainly made his cause impossible with all his dicking around and no settled team.Last night was absolutely dreadful. 4 nil would still have done Mansfield a disservice and they were pants. Silko,Rankine,Norburn,Mellish,Goodwin,Sibbick,Weir,Asamoah, have all looked league 2/National League at best.Jury out on Dale and I’ll be amazed if Taylor even considers signing come summer being weve advertised him to the benefit of Forest. Then there’s Josh Robinson……what the hell was that signing about….when will he be ready???…We are all pissed that we’ve 0 strikers available and no matter what bull story we hear as to why it’s total negligence on behalf of which f####wit oversees recruitment.Remember “no budget for a striker” then sign Asamoah on dead day!!! I don’t agree waiting till end of season for a replacement…..in now….polish the steaming turd…..then give the playing squad an enema. Unfortunately any potential candidate with a modicum of integrity will surely want some cast iron assurances concerning squad investment and I for one think they’ll have more chance trawling up Whelans war chest.5 March 2025 at 4:12 pm #205291I agree with all that.
I suppose of anything it does bring to the forefront that we will be able to see if a new man’s likely to be backed (by who comes in) as opposed to Maloney having to scrap the barrel.
I’m also not so sure how suchlikes as Lowe, Evatt, Warne would be keen to work alongside Rioch with him as a director of football. Again, there would be more chance of that with Richardson or a novice coming in.
I’d personally like a fresh man to come in, be left alone to do his job and be backed by the board. -
