31 December 2025 at 10:57 am #206581Important update on access to The Brick Community Stadium via Walmsley Bridge.
- Important Update | Walmsley Bridge Closure
- The closure affects Latics’ New Year’s Day home
- fixture against Barnsley FC
- The Walmsley Bridge closure will take place between 12pm and 6pm
Please be aware that Walmsley Bridge, which connects Springfield to the stadium across the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, will be closed for our New Year’s Day fixture against Barnsley FC 2026 between 12pm and 6pm.
This is an important interim and precautionary measure and is in the interests of public safety.
Stadium management and Wigan Council will be working together to find a long-term solution, but the closure will likely remain in place for a number of upcoming matches.
Wigan Athletic and The Brick Community Stadium fully appreciate that this will be an inconvenience to our supporters who use this route for their journey to and from the stadium on matchdays. It is important that supporters respect the closure, and we thank you for your patience, cooperation and understanding.
Please make alternative arrangements so you can get to the match in plenty of time.
Access to the stadium will be possible via Stadium Way and also from the Western routes around Robin Park and Loire Drive.

1 January 2026 at 10:38 am #206592If the bridge is unsafe it’s unsafe to everyone. Now you might say it’s numbers going across. All’s you need to do is single file people. Yes it take longer but you will still be able to get across.
Someone’s posted a picture of a rusty handrail. I’d say a day’s work for a welder and there’s enough of them on Miry Lane.
I think it’s a policing issue. Of late I’ve noticed there’s been an awful lot of police this side of the bridge.
I’d bet the old Dave Whelan policing cost has raised its ugly head and with no police in place on the ground side of the bridge they’ve deemed it unsafe on a match day.
Let’s face it, if it is a rusty handrail that’s unsafe it’s unsafe to everyone. Can you imagine if a member of the public on a non match day had an accident? they’d sue the council for thousands.
If a bridge is deemed unsafe it’s closed to everyone and not once have the council said it’s structurally unsafe they are just saying unsafe
Me?, I’ve noticed of late far far more police on both sides of the bridge including horses and riot gear police a scary amount.
So I think Dansons questioned this, and the police and council have said:
If you don’t have police manning the bridge before after on the ground side we’ll deem it as
UNSAFE
hence why the word *structural* has been missing from any council statement or the club

1 January 2026 at 1:21 pm #206596I go across that bridge on matchdays, walks and bike rides that so called damage has been like that for months maybe over a year, the local authority haven’t picked up on this, so no regular inspections have taken place, that corrosion hasn’t happened overnight, my guess would be a member of the public has reported the state of the bridge.
Since the closure someone has been around the bridge taking photos and posting them on social media that is the only evidence we have up to now. I agree and reckon it’s all down to Policing costs and people are looking for excuses.

2 January 2026 at 12:46 pm #206607Accident waiting to happen. Loads on canal towpath after game…..shuffling along, pitch black. Then all trying to filter through a 1 person wide exit at Seven Stars Bridge. Health and safety disgrace……someone or some organisation has to be held accountable. Then again…..football supporters in this country treated like criminals and heathens……authorities couldn’t give a w###…..Interesting when the brothers of Burnley arrive!!!!
3 January 2026 at 11:02 am #206608Just a little more on the canal bridge fiasco, a guy that drinks in the Brickmakers has asked for Freedom of Information from Wigan Council, some good points raised that echo’s what I posted the other day.
