Absolutly dire
Lets look at the facts –
Boyce – started at centre half and fired off, yes better rb that mm
Bramble – under Bruce looked to be getting back on track, under RM dire
Melchiot – dire
Figeroa – on his way out and not performing – direOptions which incidently are RM signings
Amaya -clearly not up to it or he would have been played
Ghouri – ditto
Caldwell – clearly bought as the above two are not up to it and are direAlso under RM no defence coach
All in all a big mess – one that will cost us our PL place

wont cost us our pl place hull have a tougher run in than usI don’t think the zonal defending system helps, never understood why managers use it. Other than not having a centre half shouting at them every day, I really don’t know what’s the excuse for some of our defending.
We can criticize Martinez all we want, but no one can tell me that he coaches an Austrian intnernational, an ex Dutch international and an ex U21 interntional to make the basic errors those 3 made yesterday….with that and other appalling pieces of defending this season, I think its time our back 4 took long looks at themselves and questioned what they have been doing for the majority of the season.
I don’t think the zonal defending system helps, never understood why managers use it. Some defenders have bags of skill and abillaty to take players on .there is allways the risk you can get caught out.Mario a few years ago could do it for fun. face it none of us get any younger but if the players dont get told or boll-ck when they mess up there gona do it all the time.thats why you need a caldwell in your team to steady them there not getting it off the sidelines when they should. thats what a manager and coach is for in it ?
ok – so I missed Sharner and Gohouri has been injured for part of the season
But the general point is that the defence has cost us big time, something has gone badly wrong in this department AND not one of the coaching staff has the knowledge or experience to sort it out
Oh and I almost missed out Kirkland – where do I start with himWe have only scored more than 1 goal in a game on about 5 occasions in the league this season. It’s not just the defence thats the problem.
To be honest we have had enough possession and enough chances all season to have won at least another 4 or 5 games, we havent converted and this must be down to the strikers. I just wonder if we had gone 4-4-2 then would this have made the difference.
Problem with Wigan is that all teams know they can beat us, on our day we are decent but knowing we have such a leaky defence will boost opposition teams.
What ever happens in the summer we need some new defenders, but also the key is for a 5 man midfield with 2 defencive midfielders, we shouldnt be leaking goals so much. Stick Thomas Henry in front of the back 4 and let the other 2 in the centre do their thing.
My general rule is look at the goal difference, usually doesnt lie, and we should be in the bottom 3.
We have been nilled 12 times this season and have nilled other teams 6 times. 30 goals is a big worry and if we survive it will by the skin of our teeth. I posted earlier in the season saying i was worried where the goals would come from. If they want half a chance of scoring from midfield then they should give Koumas a decent run in the team. What a waste of talent. Creative talent.
Koumas has let us down at every given opportunity yosser, can’t see why he would be any different now. Too busy counting his dosh, biggest waste of money ever by this club, I was made up when we brought him in but he’s done nothing at all, looked out of his depth against Notts County.

I agree that zonal marking is rubbish and doesn’t work, but I disagree with your claim that players need to be boll0cked when they mess up. They’re not thick, they know when they’ve messed up, they don’t need some guy shouting at them. They need encouragement and a point in the right direction.
The point I was making about having a centre half *shouting at them was the general point that having Bruce leading the training seemed to prove beneficial for our defenders, that know-how that Bruce brings with him was a great benefit and maybe we need a specialist coach in to work with our back 4.
*Perhaps shouting was the wrong word, but the advice and guidance of someone like Bruce would surely be invaluable.
