Qatar have an unbelievable amount of money – they’d be able to match the wages of most of the richest clubs anywhere. They are mostly getting players nearing the end of their career though, it’s becoming the MLS of the Middle East.
16 June 2010 at 10:52 pm #37626Not quite the middle east but Uzbekistan are the same, Their Man Utd of their league boasts the likes of Rivaldo and Denilson and up until last season had Scolari as their manager…..Interesting bit….contracts
Scolari…..13m a year
Rivaldo….5.1m a year, Just signed a new 4 year contract…38 years old
Denilson…..reported 3m a yearAlso tried to sign Eto’o for 10m a year, scary really
17 June 2010 at 9:50 pm #37724I have lived and worked in Dubai for the last 3 years or so. Dubai is bust, they cannot finish the projects they started, never mind new ones.
Abu Dhabi are rich, so much so that they bailed Dubai out to the tune of 30+ billion dollars.
But as for Qatar, they make Abu Dhabi look like Marsh Green. They are now the richest nation on earth, and on paper, every Qatari is pretty much a millionaire (national wealth / population).
Most of the expat guys who moved on from Dubai have gone there. Expats from Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Al Ain, Cairo are all going over there at a rate of knots. The place will be the new Dubai, but not on borrowed money. They are doing 5 golf courses (same as Dubai), 4 football Stadiums in Doha (3 more than Dubai) (air conditioned with roofs like Cardiff) – look at their World Cup bid, new tallest building in world etc.
If any of you want a few years work tax free abroad over the next ten years – this is the place to be, it will be booming in 18 months. Went to Doha a few weeks back, in one month alone 6 bar chains have opened up a Doha branch (under licence from various hotels).
I would be willing to bet that half the premier league who are over 30 end up there when these stadiums are built.
All the signs out here point to Doha being the new Dubai, THE place to be seen (holiday wise) within 2-3 years, leaving Dubai part finished and forgotten. (I go in 8 months on internal transfer).

Won’t be flogging deck chairs Griff, making assumptions based on nothing? I suspected so. I wouldn’t give p a job that is more than likely better paid than yours to ‘Flog deck chairs’.
Even if I did flog deck chairs it would still be better waking up in the sun having a good time, than twiddling my thumbs at a desk all day posting on CL because my job is boring the life out of me. Like you Griff ;)

20 June 2010 at 3:50 pm #38043…that is more than likely better paid than yours…I doubt it very, very much.
I actually love my job mate. What’s even better is that I can break it up by winding up berks like while I’m doing it too
