Wigan manager Roberto Martinez admits he faces a tough decision as to whom to appoint as Latics skipper in succession to Mario Melchiot.
After the departure of Melchiot in the summer, Martinez is weighing up his options. Melchiot, Titus Bramble and Paul Scharner all wore the armband at one point or another last season, and the gaffer admits that it’s a tough decision he’ll be making over the coming weeks, outlining the qualities needed to take on such a responsibility.
“We haven’t decided upon that yet, it’s something we’ll be looking into over the next few weeks,” Martinez told the club’s official site.
“There are a few strong characters in the dressing room, good leaders which will develop nicely throughout pre-season.
“It has to be a figure that is respected by the group and who will lead them. It’s a kind of natural selection and one of the easiest selections you’ll see in the dynamics of a dressing room.”
The gaffer also took the time to reflect upon the contributions of Melchiot and Scharner, experienced players who played a massive role at Latics in their time at the club;
“Mario Melchiot and Paul Scharner gave tremendous effort to this football club and I’m sure everyone will support them in their next moves.
“They left fond memories for everyone here and they are a big part of Wigan Athletic’s history. On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to wish them the very best of luck for the future.”
Wouldn’t mind seeing Bramble be the captain next season, Simply because he scored alot of vital goals last season for us and he might be able to get the lad’s going….

He scored twice. All contributions gratefully received and all that but its hardly “alot”
15 July 2010 at 12:19 pm #40031I think Bramble is a great player, but he needs to remain focussed on his own game.
We all know what can happen if he has a lapse in concentration.
For me, Bramble shouldn’t be captain.
I’m going to stick my neck out here and throw Gohouri into the mix. I think he played well at the end of last sseason and he seemed to be urging others on too.
15 July 2010 at 10:15 pm #40095Number of goals scored has nothing at all to do with whether someone should be captain.
It’s about leadership on the pitch. Who can encourage, cajole when necessary, drive, influence etc etc.
Titus would be a great captain but needs to focus on his own role rather than worry about anyone else.
Strikers tend not to be captains (and someone will tell me of a large number who are, but I said “tend”) as they have a particular role to play; similarly keepers who are a step distant from influencing players in front of them (and yes, I know about Casillas and Zoff and whoever else).
I don’t know enough about the relationships in the team to know who is perceived as “the leader”. I am sure there is one though.
16 July 2010 at 12:37 am #40105Bramble scored alot of vital goals? Who’s strike rate are we comparing his to, Scotland’s?

The way Diame plays the game i would consider him to be a fantastic captain. Butttttt he probably cant communicate with the team very well, hes still fairly young maybe a future captain if we can keep him!
16 July 2010 at 1:22 pm #40129Bramble ….
16 July 2010 at 1:26 pm #40131At the moment, for me it can only be Caldwell. His few lapses are far outweighed by his commitment, contribution, communication and everything else beginning with ‘c’.
Personally, I’d prefer our as yet-to-be-bought experienced midfield shythouse to be the team captain but as he doesn’t exist yet, it would be Caldwell for me.
I wouldn’t trust Bramble to put the cones out at training without losing concentration. Why give the lad further responsibility? Let him worry about his own game and nothing else.

I wouldn’t even put Caldwell in the starting 11 as his preformances haven’t been exactly captain material. Although, if we have injuries in defence, make him Captain.
16 July 2010 at 2:31 pm #40135I think Caldwell is also prone to the odd concentration lapse so if people are ready to give this mon the Captaincy then surely Bramble should be worth a shout n all. Yes he shouts and organises well but he isn’t our best defender and if Alcaraz signs isn’t guaranteed to start so I wouldn’t have him as Captain.
Very young n all that, but what about McCarthy. I dont have a clue TBH, nobody strikes me as an obvious choice.
If Gohouri can force his way into the team think he’d be a good shout.

So, you wouldn’t pick him at all, but in an emergency you’d not only pick him but make him captain? :?
It’s probably that lack of joined-up thinking that explains why, I guess, there aren’t many on the board who give a flyer what you think
16 July 2010 at 2:42 pm #40137I dont have a clue TBH, nobody strikes me as an obvious choice. That’s fair comment, but as for Bramble v Caldwell, I’d think I’d prefer the latters’ more up and at ’em, aggressive attitude than Bramble’s more laid back approach.

You never know though, the captaincy could be just the thing to bring Bramble out of his shell so to speak. I wouldn’t have either of em to be honest, as their both prone to the odd clanger, and their form and temperament in the said game could dip as a result, summat u dont want your captain having.
Whats reckon to McCarthy as vice captain? Think if we can keep hold of him for long enough, he’ll be a real player for us.

Would love an experienced shyte house in our midfield its the 1 thing were badly missing. Some1 to drive us on, i think in time Diame could be the man! Might have to learn English first though

Or it could just be the thing to make him lose all his confidence again. You just never know with Titus :P -
