This 4-5-1 / 4-2-3-1 or whatever it is does not work. I can think of 4 games in 1 year where it has worked.
So why do we still use it? We couldn’t beat Blackpool using it, we couldn’t beat Portsmouth using it, we couldn’t beat Hull using it, we couldn’t beat Wolves at home using it, we couldn’t beat Bolton using it and we couldn’t beat Blackburn using it. We couldnt even beat Notts County!! twice using it. And we only just beat Burnley in the 90th minute infact.
So why do we still use it? It works for Barcelona & it works for the Spainish national team because they have world class players. We had the Championship’s top scorer in our attack last season who managed one goal in the league for us. It wouldn’t shock me to see Argentina’s top scorer score a similar amount with the number chances we create. When Martinez joined he promised attacking, entertaining football. Unless your sat in the away end, its neither. We try to pass the ball and with 3 passes its in the opponents feet or out of play. Its frustrating and were not getting the best out of what i consider a talented bunch of individuals.
My heart says stick with him, my head says get a Bruce/Allardyce type manager in. Anything to get the best out of our squad, even if it means long ball.
