I know, defeat is never acceptable, but, stretching our creative powers to the maximum we might be able to envisage a scenario where do don’t beat Chelsea.
0-2 and we have done ok?
0-3/4 and its to be expected. Chelsea are rather good
0-5+ christand the counting of goals for these purposes doesnt stop when you walk out at 75 minutes
20 August 2010 at 1:09 pm #43316Its not so much that there’s an acceptable level of defeat but that there’s an acceptable level of effort & commitment from the team
i can take my team getting thumped by any scoreline as long as they’ve given their all – collapsing & seeming to give up as they have done on many occasions over the last 12 months is what gets on my wazz
20 August 2010 at 1:44 pm #43323Likewise, I can take a defeat by ANYBODY…..as long as they’ve had to play well and really work to beat us. If you can see our lads have given their all, but get beat, you can’t ask any more.
But any performance like last week, is clearly not acceptable.
I think that 4-0 V Chelsea would not be a disgrace. However, I can quite easily see them getting 6 or 7. I just think that if they score a couple, the floodgates will open.
I honestly think that if we put in a shocking performance again, and get absolutely tonked, Whelan will have no choice but to sack Martinez. More to do with the shocking performance, rather than the numerical conclusion*.
*That’s the score, for you and me, put in a way only the Spanish Tactician could make sound complicated, oh Technical Person that he is.
20 August 2010 at 3:03 pm #43337quite right. assume the result reflects the greatness/abject dusgust at the performance
20 August 2010 at 7:24 pm #43370If they give 100% it’s a start.
Latics 2-2 Chelsea
Boselli to score.20 August 2010 at 10:28 pm #434116 or more and Martinez will be out on his ear
20 August 2010 at 11:51 pm #434201-0 acceptable, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 ..
anything else, not good.

I don’t mind losing to the big teams but i’d rather them play well and try at least
21 August 2010 at 12:38 am #434276/1 the draw.
Will be having Latics win/draw double chance.21 August 2010 at 1:11 am #43430Anonymous
I know somebody that’s put £5 on it finishing 10-0.
I can’t see that happening at all: we’re at home, and that should count for something, right?
Our biggest defeat at home to Chelsea (that I can remember) is 3-0. They’ve gained more fire power and swagger since then, though, so I’m picturing 4-0 or 5-0.
I would love for us to grab a couple of goals, at least it will show the BBC, SSN and the press that we didn’t just roll over and let them trample all over us.
I would class 4-2 as a major improvement over the performance last week, but if they really have learned from their mistakes they would be doing everything they can to get a draw out of this game.
Sadly we won’t be playing 4-4-2, and so it will end 5-0.
21 August 2010 at 1:25 am #43437Will call in at the bookies tomorrow to check the prices on 2-2, Boselli anytime scorer and Latics/Draw double chance.

‘Jeffrey Bruma was due to undergo a hernia operation today while Kakuta has a back injury – but Jose Bosingwa has resumed training and could return to action in two to three weeks.‘
