With Widnes RL Club starting the new season at their new venue on a plastic pitch it has once again raised the question about their return to football(pitches, not Widnes)
What are everyones views on this?
I have just seen a picture on NW Tonight of the horrific injuries one of the players suffered.
Surely it would be a backward step??6 February 2012 at 11:57 pm #80711Anonymous
i think all kids should play on these, it teaches you to stay on your feet and pass the ball and vastly improves you first touch as the ball skids at you
7 February 2012 at 1:09 pm #80768There’s absolutely nowt wrong with em for playing football on in my opinion & they’re alot safer (in terms of injuries) than some of the rock hard & bone dry grass pitches I’ve played & reffed on over the years.
I’m no professional footballer but I’ve played on the i-pitches & done sliding tackles & the grazing occurs but is minimal.
However I’m not sure it’s a suitable surface for playing rugby league on seeing as how a large portion of the game is being slammed to the floor by big fat blokes & the subsequent scraping across the surface that this leads to as its bound to cause more severe friction burns than would occur in football
Back to football I fully expect to see them back in non & lower league football within the next few years
7 February 2012 at 1:35 pm #80769They can also be used by all the comunity. Schools or local clubs could use them midweek without being turfed off (pun completely intentional) because they would damage the grass.

Surely it would be a backward step??The ‘injuries’ suffered by a player on Saturday playing at Salford were much worse. (and probably the ones you saw on the news as they’ve been confusing them alot)

The pictures were definitely from RL played on a plastic pitch. If Salfords is a plastic pitch also, then the pictures could have been from there.
