Please forgive me if it is me reading too much into this section of an article about Bents injury at the weekend.
The article initially focuses on the physiological nature of Bents injury. It then pursues a euro championship slant before coming out with the following:
“Bent landed awkwardly after a challenge from Antolin Alcaraz during the second half at the DW Stadium, which the Latics share with rugby league giants Wigan Warriors, and left the ground wearing a protective boot.”Now……
Is there any real reason in mentioning our so called “giant” neighbours at the DW stadium.
I don’t usually bother too much about articles marrying the two together, but I see mo real reason for rugby league to hijack a footballing piece of journalism.
I’m obviously getting old and cranky as I’m annoyed that this has even caught my attention.
28 February 2012 at 1:40 am #81949Its probably an indirect way of stating that our pitch isn’t the best and might have not helped the way Bent landed.
Ball was bobbling all over the place Saturday.
28 February 2012 at 1:44 am #81950The daily mirror mentions the same thing as well,
only they seem to be blaming the rugby for bent missing
the Holland friendly and maybe the euros28 February 2012 at 11:46 am #81953Anonymous

28 February 2012 at 1:48 pm #81960have you only just noticed, its a rugby town always will be in the eyes of anyone but WAFC fans !
29 February 2012 at 12:20 am #81972our pitch usually isn’t very good this time of year anyway and is nothing to do with rugby being played on it once a fortnight. not very hard being giants in the world of rugby league is it,its worst than the spl where there is only one giant now.

I actually read it as being critical of our neighbours. They never said “giant”, they never said we were a rugby town, they purely blamed rugby for messing up the pitch. Something lots on here do all the time
