Don’t know if this has been posted before, but it proves that there are things going on behind the scenes that are quite reassuring. Latics have signed a partnership with Maghull, giving the kids there the opportunity to experience the premier league academy set up. Apparently they’ve got a good youth set up, in fact a good set up full stop, the only thing stopping them going further is infrastructure.
Just shows that there are initiatives to build solid foundations for the future, and it’s sensible stuff from the ground up by the looks of it, a long term plan, which if carried out professionally, could pay massive dividends in the long term. No doubt there’s other avenues being looked at aswell, and it could give us a head start on other clubs that seem to rely on buying themselves out of trouble, something that will eventually be outlawed with all this financial fair play stuff.
Bobby is instrumental in these changes and improvements, and should be commended for it, who knows how good a state the club could be in with a few more years of fundamental improvement, well done I say.20 March 2012 at 5:18 am #83582Anonymous
Promising signs indeed
20 March 2012 at 12:51 pm #83586Promising signs indeedA friend of mine at works kid was offered a chance to move away from Everton youth team to join Wigan, much closer and better reputation. The kid got there, spend 1 week with the squad, couldnt believe how amaturish they were and went back to Everton.
We probably need to sort this type of thing out if we want to attract youngsters.
20 March 2012 at 2:39 pm #83593I’ve been involved with Everton’s youth set up a few times as a ref & (from an outsider’s point of view anyway) it’s a pretty impressive set up which I wouldn’t expect Latics to come anywhere near close to.
They’ve got to aspire to that level though so hopefully things are being put in place to drag things up20 March 2012 at 3:00 pm #83595My dad was involved at everton, coaching and scouting for the youth set up, likes of cadamarteri were coming through then. Part of his job was watching local kids league games at the weekends and picking out any potential, a club like everton put a lot into this kind of thing, because it makes financial sense, and the kids are brought through with the everton mentality. That’s what Wigan need to do, and if Bobby is taking his footballing philosophy to that side of things too, then it’s all good in my opinion, it’s got to be easier bringing kids up with a style and mentality, than it is to tell maturer players to completely change theirs. It’ll take time, and there’ll be ups and downs no doubt, but in the words of The special one, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.
20 March 2012 at 5:18 pm #83599If / when we do go down, I think it will be easier for a team like Wigan to blood new players in the Championship. Over the past few years it has been almost impossible to play the youngsters in the league due to the position we are in and the cups last longer than a 99 when the sun comes out..
