Latics are desperate to end their 100% record of losses against Alex Fergusson’s team and with them having big injury problems and some bizarre results this season, Wigan Athletic must believe they have a decent chance against Manchester United on Wednesday night.
Roberto Martinez was very happy with the performance against Blackburn and but for some bad luck and being kicked all over the park we could have gained all three points. With Wolves losing 3-0 to City Latics actually moved up a place in the table without playing, although if there is a result in the Bolton v Hull game we’ll lose it again.
We are half way now and sit on 19 points, great performances though have been overshadowed by dominating matches against Hull, Wolves, Birmingham, Everton and Blackburn but only coming away with one point from them all. The performances and desire we saw in the wins against Villa and Chelsea are what we want to see, but staying well away from the disasters we have had against Spurs and the 5-0 drumming our hosts gave us earlier this year.
Bobby has no new injury worries; just Diame is out with his knee ligament strain. Manchester United have far too many to list, but Vidic, Giggs and Brown all featured in the demolition of Hull at the weekend. The key at the moment is Wayne Rooney who seems to be the key to their battling wins lately, although the frailties at the back have already been shown up by Burnley and more recently Fulham.
There is no doubt that this is going to be a tough match, United will want to keep on top of Chelsea at the top and whatever team takes to the pitch it will be a good one. The result will sway heavily in what frame of mind Latics turn up in, if go there with our Chelsea beating head on, we have a chance of something.
Paul Scharner will almost certainly play even though by his standards he had a quiet game on Saturday, it is also nailed on that he’ll get a yellow so his suspension will be for the visit of Hull in the FA Cup rather than a League game.
The referee will be Lee Mason.
