Ladies & Gents
Please could you use this thread to post your thoughts and memories of Lee McCulloch’s Wigan career.
Please feel free to be as candid as you want to be.
Owd Lee McCulloch, It became evident quite quickly that he was far too good for Division 2 and the higher up the leagues we got the better he became. What sticks out in my mind are two things. Kick off’s, Booting it straight up to Lee on the left hand side every match and him winning it 90% of the time. And 2, THAT Reading match at the end of the 2005 season.
One of my favourite players as I’m only a young’un! Always gave 100% and as hard as nails! Top man, loved the club.
I was best mates with a relative of his from school, took in my “Who’s who of Wigan Athletic” book and got it signed by all the players in the dressing room with personal messages over the players portraits. Including one off a certain Paul Jewell! Was made up!
Joined us in the Third tier of our game, left us in the Premiership. Can’t say fairer than that.
Some of his goals were magnificent, and his one against Reading really got the ball rolling. Scored screamers against Notlob and Wet Spam….need I say anymore?
A real 110%er who adapted well to that left sided role, giving us an unorthadox, but extremely effective formation.
Bought from Motherwell, along with Sicknote.
Not good enough (as a young ‘un) to cut it as prolific centre-forward.
Converted to left-sided right-footed midfielder by Jewell and made the position his own. Became something of a star. Always gave it his best. Has stayed loyal to Rangers.
Another good memory….scoring the winner in last couple of minutes at Britannia…cracking goal…our first ever win away at Stoke (hate ’em). Came in a midweek game, following the prior weekend away at Leeds (2-0). Two cracking victories…we were on our way to the PREMIERSHIP !!
Also. I believe he scored an overhead kick against Oxford too… If my memory serves me right? Not bad for a 6’5 Scot!
Can’t claim any particular insight, but he seemed like a top bloke. One of the lads.
Played wherever he was needed.
Never heard anything bad about him.
Never any transfer rumours, never got ‘big’ ideas. Reckon he just loved playing football and when he got the chance to play for his boyhood team, Rangers, we let him go. Great to see he has stuck by them through thick and thin.In our recent history he’s up there with DeZeuw, Valencia, Baines, Boyce. One of a handful of players that, if he turned up in a game against us, would not get booed and we’d probably sing his song.

Super Lee McCullochAgree with everything that’s been said about Lee, one thing that I can add, he and his family were at the same hotel abroad on holiday, one of my daughters suitcases went missing on the flight outbound, Lee and his wife leant them clothes for our grandson, who at the time was the same age as Lee’s son.

Agreed. He would never have to buy a pint in a pub full of Latics fans. I look forward to seeing him visiting Latics after he’s retired.
We definitely miss his heading ability. Don’t think we’ve scored with a bullet header since he left !!!
His goal against Stoke late on taking us to 23/24??? games unbeaten run. Lost the next game like. “We are unbeatable” :woohoo: as his low thunderbolt hit the back of the net
When he put one on Sheff United Morgan, made a rigth mess. Was brave enough to confront him later and apologise.
