Tony McCloughlin, who played for us in early 1970’s, has passed away. He had been suffering from illness and in a care home recently. He was 67.
Tony still holds the individual match goalscoring record for the 7 he scored against Darwen in a 11-0 win in the early 70’s. (I am sure one of you ‘old-timers’ will add the correct details.)
What makes it more amazing, is the fact that it was his comeback match after being suspended for a period for being caught also playing Sunday league football. That is one hell of a comeback match!
Tony had also had spells at Everton, and later in Hong Kong. I was told this news just before by my friend who’s dad is Tony’s cousin.
RIP Tony. Surely that record of seven goals in a game will last forever now.
