5-4-Friday… 5 dopplegangers

In my younger, thinner faced days, I took myself off to Prague to enjoy some culture, not to mention quite a few pints of superb beer, for the wonderful price of 19p a pint!

I was in a souvenir shop, looking at an array of trinkets, adorned with images of the wonderful city, when I was approached by a staff member saying “You shindler?” I looked bemused. “You shindler?” she said again, saying it several times. She was joined by a few more Czech girls, all asking the same….”You shindler?”

I said “Shindler? Shindler’s list?” and they said “No! you SHAND-LER!”. I was still struggling to understand. Then one of them added “You Shandler from ‘Friends’!”

Now, I wasn’t really acquainted with that well-known American TV show at the time, and I only had a slight inkling of what they were getting at. I realised they actually thought I was CHANDLER, a character from ‘Friends’, or rather the actor that played him. This was in 2001 and to be honest, the Yanks were bigger tourists in Prague then, than us Brits, so to the girls mistaking me for him, it must’ve seemed very possible.

So what did I do? I smiled, had my photo taken with them and signed my name. The problem being, I couldn’t quite recall the actor’s name who played him. Was is Matthew Perry, Matt Le Blanc, or David Schwimmer? All of them are actors playing the male parts in the show. I think I guessed at Matt Le Blanc, who actually plays the part of ‘Joey Tribiani’ in the show, rather than ‘Chandler Bing’, who I was mistaken for.

So those 4 or 5 Czech girls actually got ‘2 for the price of one’, in the sense that they got their photo with ‘Matthew Perry’, and the autograph of ‘Matt Le Blanc’. I wonder how long it took them to notice? :lol:
