Latics went to the Wham Stadium looking to extend their 3 game unbeaten run, and at half time it was looking grim. At full time it was worse but again it wasn’t what the performance deserved.
Wigan Athletic are renowned for their great attitude in adversity and it looked like it was going to be a day that was going our way as we notched a goal through Callum Lang in the first minute.
After a great run and feed by Dan Gardner, Lang calmy stroked the ball into the Accrington goal and everything was going swimmingly.
Just 90 seconds later though, an Accrington set piece saw McConville deliver the ball to the head of Burgess who blasted the ball in the Latics goal.
We nearly went back in front a couple of minutes later with Gardner and Lang again linking up but Lang’s shot this time missed narrowly to the left.
Wigan were getting at them and forced a couple of comers before Accrington got their foot on the ball with McConville hitting the bar. The tactics were starting to show through and it looks like they worked out the referee was giving free kicks for the slightest dive, erm I mean touch, and boy did they use this.
From another of these soft free kicks, McConville flung another ball in the box, Jones tried to clear only for it to ricochet off Nottingham into the back of the net. 15 minutes gone and 2-1, but Latics were still looking like they were the ones that would get something as they went forward without having any telling shots.
The best chance fell the way of Lang who was set free down the left wing only for him to take a touch too many and had his shot come cross put out for a corner.
Accrington came out fast and furious in the second half, but to Latic’s credit they defended well in the first 10 minutes and even forged a chance on the break as Darikwa was sent off down the left on a break. Unfortunately he couldn’t get the ball fully under control and it ran through safely to the Accy goalkeeper.
Latics started to look good and Dodoo, Darikwa and Robinson all went close. But disaster hit as Darikwa tracked back and collided with McConville in the box, Charles blasted the ball down the middle for the penalty for 3-1.
We picked up after this body blow, Ojo was hacked down and Latics forced a block from the resulting free kick. Richardson introduced Proctor to the game and made an immediate impression.
Firstly shooting from distance to pull a save then heading wide from a free kick after Lang was fouled. 20 minutes to go and after a lot of passing across the field, Wootton had a decent shot well saved.
Proctor then found himself looking to capitalise on a defensive mix up, but the Latics striker couldn’t quite get his head to the ball with the goal gaping. This was quickly followed by Dodoo and Darikwa sending shots just high of the goal.
Lang had a great opportunity as we attacked in numbers, but the ball just wouldn’t come under control, but his shot did ricochet out to Proctor who had his effort very well saved and out for a corner. The keeper again kept us out from the resulting corner saving from Tilt.
Jamie Jones was redundant for nearly 20 minutes of this half, since the penalty was just a spectator. But Accrington did get a break and flew down to the Latics goal and the keeper showed his metal by pulling off a superb save.
The last few saw us have a lot of possession in the opposition half, but the defence and Savin were equal to everything we through at them.
Final score 3-1 and we know we should have done better, but alas we didn’t. The other results in teams around us didn’t go in our favour and so we again see ourselves sat I the relegation zone.
