JASON ROBERTS’ EXTRA-TIME GOAL VOTED WIGAN ATHLETIC’S FAVOURITE ‘MOMENT IN TIME’
Jason Roberts’ goal in extra-time of the 2006 Carling Cup semi-final has won the race to be crowned Wigan Athletic’s 188SPORT ‘Moment in Time’.
The ‘Moments in Time’ campaign encouraged Latics fans to post and vote on their favourite moments from Wigan Athletic FC’s history and since 188SPORT launched the initiative in February, over 1,700 fans have had their say.
The winning moment, posted by Flynn Hagerty, details Wigan Athletic FC’s progression into the first major final in their history. Opponents Arsenal looked to have clinched the game but some slack defending allowed Jason Roberts to fire the ball past Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia in the 119th minute, sending Wigan into the final on away goals.
Flynn’s post accumulated the most votes from Latics fans and received the special prize of an invitation to the club’s end of season awards dinner. In addition, over the course of the campaign, all those who contributed by uploading their favourite moments were entered into weekly competition draws for a range of prizes including match tickets to see Wigan Athletic FC in action.
Jeff Baker, Head of Marketing Services at 188SPORT, said: “We are delighted that the ‘Moments in Time’ campaign has sparked some serious debate amongst Wigan Athletic fans. It has been great to see some passionate Latics supporters showing their enthusiasm and knowledge of their club’s history. We would like to thank everyone who took part and particularly congratulate Flynn on the popularity of his posting.”
